What are the voters looking for overall texture, or the use of grain to create an impact????????????? |

id say a few things.... maybe ppl are using bears voting tatic so those 1's might change?
and i have to say and this is only my humble opinion that there was alot of fluff in the challenge only saw 3 cracking photos, a lot seem to have got any photo gone into photoshop and added a whack of grain way more than ive ever seen on my film cameras even at 3200 iso etc, i was very subtle with my enchanced grain and i shot with my old 20d rather than my 5d to get better grain at hi iso. wonder if ppl shot this and forgot to turn noise reduction off on some of the fancier cameras haha.
i had promised myself if i lost 3 stone (42lbs) id treat myself to a 5dmkii think i should change that to getting a 6.* as thats less likely to happen lol.

Geeze, it isn't "my" system, I borrowed it from someone else and tried it in ONE free study. It's for FREE STUDIES, not themed challenges. And I doubt I'll ever do it again, it caused such a furor.

Where did you see that?
I think registered users should be alowed vote in all challenges. Might help vote counts.

Originally posted by gcoulson: Essentially, this is a Free Study Challenge with a "twist". Most folks entered a given picture and just added some grain to it. Some didn't even bother to add grain. However, IMO, there are few that used grain in their photo to add to its impact...it was more of an after thought, which in many cases did the opposite.
Definitely notice a stratification of my votes into low-mid-high depending on how grain was incorporated into the image. |
I did not just add grain as a filter, shot at 1600iso used grain for impact selected areas still didn't improve the score. 4.7 |

Better than expected but 2 comments mentioned not enough grain. I guess after spending a lot of time avoiding/getting rid off noise/grain it is a big effort to do the opposite! ;)
PS Another reason why I avoided too much grain was that quite a few of Top 10s in the previous grain challenges had hardly any visible grain so I thought a more subtle approach would be OK

Yeah, but.....some people won't vote on challenges they've entered, and some people comment without voting, so there's no way to know the spread.......your 14 number has no real basis.

I think the secret is to find a subject that has its own gritty/grainy texture to it and work with that.
I've had good luck with that in the past......this year I laid an egg 'cause I couldn't find what I wanted......8~(
