Ok, so i'm still new (learning wise) to Mac and I don't understand everything, but I have noticed that when using CS5 and having "proof color" checked, if I use the NIK Color Efex Pro plug-in, the photo colors look very different when NIK opens. How do you get them to look the same or should I even be doing that
I've noticed it with other programs also, so I'm guessing CS5 is the culprit. Also: My canvas shows up as transparent in CS5 when trying to change the size and I can't choose a color. What setting got changed
Thanks for any help! (Maybe I need to learn how to use Aperture!) |

I don't have NIk, but make sure you have "MonitorRGB" selected under Proof Setup. That'll probably take care of the color consistency.
If you have a transparent background, then your image is probably on a non-background layer. Flatten layers to get a solid background or create a new layer below that one that you can fill with any color.
Ah, changing the canvas size... I didn't read that carefully enough. When you change Canvas Size, there's a menu at the bottom of that dialog box for choosing the color of the extended area.

Maybe it's a color profile thing. CS5 may be opening files as Adobe-RGB, and Nik opening them as s=RGB.

No, sometimes we can't DO that, it's not just a mac thing, it happens in PC land. There's SOMETHING we do, some adjustment we make or something, that has the unintended consequence of making it impossible to choose a color and extend canvas, the background has become transparent, even though it started normally. It happens to me sporadically, and I've never figured out how or why. I "fix" it by flattening the image, selecting all, copying, opening a new document with a white BG, and pasting.
I'd love to know what makes it happen though.

| Certain operations, like opening a PDF in Photoshop or pasting a photo, will import the image as a layer. Then you'd continue as noted in my crossed-out comment (which is why I left it visible). |
