I'm used to topaz and what I can do and can't in basic and advanced editing challenges.

But what about color efex pro? Is it llegal in anything? Legal in basic? Parts legal in basic? What about advanced?

Thanks!

Do not use ANY control points. So far as I know, that is the limitation. Other adjustments are fine. If you use an adjustment point for any reason that is considered illegal as it is spot editing.
ETA: I have had CEP entries verified under such limitations.
Double ETA: This is for Basic edits. For advanced, almost everything is legal so far as you don't go overboard.

CFX Pro - everything is legal in Advanced; most is legal in Basic as long as you don't use control points, things like polaroid transfer where new image areas are created with the border slider will be off limits too.

One of my favorite filters is Darken/Lighten Center. Legal in Advanced, but not in Basic. Same story for Graduated filters (Fog, Neutral Density, User Defined) and Vignette (Blur, lens).

That's one of the things I'm wondering about... darken/light center. Has anyone had this validated? I'm not using a control point, and I'm not placing the center. But I have a feeling, like hahn, that it's not legal. Anybody know for sure?

It will not pass validation because that is basically vignetting and that is a no-no in basic editing. I wouldn't touch that slider in basic/minimal if I were you.

edit: That is essentially doing vignetting in ACR editor which is illegal under basic too.

Nightpixels and Hahn are correct; there are a LOT of "effects" in CEP4 that use some form or another of vignetting, localized darkening, localized or targeted blur, and so forth. You need to be very careful. It's interesting to note, btw, that the u-points in CEP4 are a different animal from the u-points in SEP2 -- in SEP u-points are like little control consoles that let you adjust structure, contrast, saturation, brightness, a whole bunch of things, independently of what global adjustments you have made.

In CEP, on the other hand, the u-points allow you to turn on/off and/or fade the chosen effect that you are targeting. So, for example, in a shot of a ship on a stormy sea you might process an effect for the sea, then you might use a u-point to mask the effect on the ship itself, then layer on another effect, process for the ship, and use u-point to mask out this effect from the surrounding sea. None of which, it goes without saying, is legal in basic editing.

I'm pretty new to CEP4, but it's my take on it that it's a scary program to play with in basic editing, but a wonderful one in all other respects. Beware!

Thanks, everyone! I turned on the effect after asking here, and thought exactly what night pixels was saying "it looks like a vignette!!". Now that being said, it looked like a gorgeous glowing center with a subtle vignette -- so I'm definitely going back to play with it on an advanced challenge!!!! :)

Thanks, all!
