I am currently in the process of voting on a challenge, but I am using my laptop which for certain operation reasons is running at a lower than usual resolution, as a result the challenge titles are generally cropped off the bottom, and unless I scroll down, I dont see them. However, this is having a big impact on my viewing and voting as I find I am looking at the photo more, not (as the case is sometimes) looking at the title then mentally making that shot `fit`... So, here a suggestion (or two) - how about a Freestudy where the images have no titles OR an option to turn photo titles off until the challenge ends..

Its actually rather liberating.

Probably a good idea that wont be used.

EDIT - try it on the pumpkin challenge if you can.

I dunno. I think titles are as important to an image as the content.
Well, not really :-) But I have bumped a score both ways due to the title (though I've stopped doing dropping them in my old age).

I inadvertently voted on most of the pics in the Candid challenge without even looking at the title. It was only when I was nearly done that I realized I hadn't read any. In hindsight, it did feel good to vote on them independent of the title. I would say that the topical challenges would be better served to be titleless rather than the Free Studies because the title is often used to shoehorn images into topical challenges, but in a Free Study, they could only enhance the image, IMO.

I don't look at titles unless I really like the photo, or if the photo confuses me.

On the other hand, would this image be as delightful
without its impeccably precise title?

remove titles during voting

some jackass started this thread years ago.

Well that's what we call being "Soft Yanko'd". Whereas a normal Yanko occurs within the same thread, a soft Yanko is more understandable and forgivable.

eta: I forgot to applaud Simms for bringing this titles issue up for discussion. :P

I certainly didn't mean to rudely break etiquette and divert or kill this thread. I just wanted to point the way to an avenue of discussion that seemed to fit here. In fact, I often neglect to search old threads for similar content.

To have a free study with no titles is not as important as having a regular very pointed challenge without titles, or "untitled" as the title of every single entry in the say, right angles challenge. Perhaps because the titles are more important in that type of challenge- in a landscape challenge, the titles are nice, can enhance, but can't serve a truly "shoehorning" purpose.

again, sorry for the diversion.

Personally, I do look at titles because it is part of the challenge requirement, just like meeting the challenge or getting DNMC'd is. Some actually help the photograph and are well thought out. Others, often not so well thought out or with much effort exerted by the photographer, hurt the photo or point out the painfully obvious and therefore that requirement within the challenge has failed.

If an artist had a gallery showing and every piece within the body of work was "Untitled", it would take some of the artistic vision away. Not everyone sees things in the same way, thus a good title by the photographer only helps to express the vision they had when they took the photograph. IMHO! :P

Ummmm- photo works well without title - I purposely avoided looking at the title when opening the image - nice shot - looked at title - nice shot. DIdn`t add much for me - and I didn`t obtusely hate the title for sake of argument.
