Also I wouldn,t get to hung up about scores and comparing your shot to others around you in the finish is I think a mistake.
If you really want top scores look back over previous front pages and you will soon see what does well here.
But winning ribbons is only part of the fun to be had in my view.

is it just me but i dislike and mark down someone who just goes and copies/gets inspariation from previous challenges there where a few in the candid which were pretty much extact replicas of previous winners, surely thats not the way to go?

I really didn,t mean to say go and copy winning challenges.I mean that if you look you will see the TYPE of shot that does well here. I dislike and mark down copies of others too. I always vote higher on images that are original at least to me.

FWIW - I didn't vote on that image, but to me, the lighting isn't working in your shot. The foreground is in shadow, while the edges of his face are too hot. I agree with the others about what is in focus also being problematic.
You're experimenting and still learning, and that's the important part...

I didn't vote in this challenge. I'm jealous both of this image receive numerous constructive comments. I don't know why nobody willing to share and give me a line of comment for my improvement. Here my opinion, just me and I could be wrong:

The image quality is very good. Exposure is great and the tone was beautiful. I think it's a good image somewhere to be rate around 7-8 but the missed focus would make it loss 2-3 points. I think voters (photographer) can see clearly where the focusing point hit.

Here is edited photo. I have no idea how to improve it without processing.

2 places higher than me
This image is weak of exposure but that maybe it's candid in hash lighting environment. Just my opinion, why choose this hash background if she can be arrange to pose. So, the mistake of this shot is photographer posses excellent communication skill causing the girl to throw sweet smiles. Not so candid but I would rate it 7.
