This Thanksgiving Caden and I are going to build a couple skating longboards with Caden's grandpa as a little project to work on (imagine a 9"x40" skateboard shaped almost like a surfboard). I have a friend in the graphics business who could print up some wraps for them and that got me thinking about some cool graphics. Because I don't want to just go online and rip something off, I'm stuck creating my own. I am NOT an artist. :) This leaves me with a few ideas of how to proceed:

1) Find a photo of my own or something in the creative commons area and tweak/filter it into something interesting.
2) Use components of famous paintings (probably cooler for my own board, Caden may not dig that as much).
3) Use a workable pattern like tribal designs or celtic knots.

Anybody have any other cool ideas? We're both excited about the project even though neither of us are boarders (as of yet).

For me, "longboard" means old-school surfing. I'd look at graphics associated with the early/mid 60's surf scene and go from there. If you need inspiration, watch Endless Summer.

I like the knots idea. Remember to get a few extra printed up smaller so you can toss a few similar graphics on your helmet for the full sponsorship look.

How do the wraps go on the board? Do they just cover the bottom like big stickers, or would they cover the top and bottom? The reason I ask is you'll need to put grip tape on top of the deck and whatever you stick it to better be secure to the wood part of the board or you're asking for trouble.

Now that's some sweet action!

This is actually kind of fun. Here were three photos of mine that seemed appropriate to the task...

Yes. Good point. Likely just on the bottom with the sandpaper grip on the top.
