Hi
I have been using TIF Format for storing my Images, But now when i am taking backup i have to store them in lots of CDs*( I dont have DVD)
Reason i never stored them in jpeg format was that i read some where everytime one opens and views jpeg file , compression takes place
SO i thought it will affect my picture quality, when i wanted to take printouts
are my fears right or wrong |

Save your images in whatever format the originals are in (RAW, JPEG, TIF...). Compression only takes places when you SAVE a JPEG. Opening and viewing has no effect since you aren't writing anything to the file. |

It's not everytime you open an image...
It's everytime you open and *save* an image that you get JPG Compression and Artifacts. You can open and close a JPG everyday/all day with no loss of quality, it is just opening and saving it that caused the loss.
After I peruse through my RAW Images, I toss out the ones that are really terrible or unsavable. Then I export those to TIFF format. Then I do my editing, if needed and save the final file as a JPG with high quality.
If I get really busy with the image, I might consider writing down my steps, in order to recreate later, if needed. Once I am completed and need to long-term store an image, I will put the original RAW and 'completed' JPG together onto a CD, tossing away the TIFF, since the original RAW can be used to easily recreate the TIFF.
Anyway, that's my 'plan of attack'.
I haven't had to worry about long-term archiving just yet, I have several GB's of storage space on my home server. Although, I am pretty sure that I will need to get into long term archiving soon, since I have greatly increased my photographic pursuits.

I backup my pics bye writing them on a CD (dont have a DVD either), one original (RAW or JPEG) and one "final" or edited version.
I wonder if any of you use some compression like Zip or Rar? Dont you loose some quality or are you able to receive original quality by decompression? |

If you ZIP a JPG you won't lose any quality in the image, ZIP is a 'lossless' compression. Unfortunately, you won't get much of a compression, since a JPG is already a compressed format. There just isn't much 'space' left in the file to shrink it further.
