Well, with my entry at 5.3529 after 17 votes, I'm wondering if any of my alternates might have scored better. Please let me know what you think of these (they're all under 50K, so there might be some compression artifacts):
Thanks,
Ara

I sorta like the salt and pepper shakers, although the composition is a bit static. I don't get why the containers contents are slanted like that, for one thing. The photo itself is good, but suffers from what my own entry probably suffers from -- at the end of the day, it's still just a pair of shakers. (Mine isn't shakers, but you get the idea). The other four I would have scored below five. The shakers? A five, maybe a six.

Thanks. :) The shaker contents are on an angle to add drama. Guess I didn't succeed there. The other four below five? Ouch. Care to 'splain? Don't like the harsh light? Annoying composition? Hate asphalt?

I prefer the shakers best too. The first one is very un-interesting, second loses out on the out of focus blue in the background and the lack of general composition really. The third just seems very dead and not appealing in interesting subject matter. The fourth suffers in terms of curves compared to straight lines. The fifth suffers from the highlights on the tops, but definitely a 7 or 8 for me. I love the soft lighting at the back, and I like the slanting for sure. Just a personal opinion though !! |

I like the shakers the best as well. My objection to the others is that while they are everyday objects, they look like they do everyday. The ones that I find myself rating the highest in this challenge seem to be the ones that make me say, "hey - that _is_ an everyday object, I never quite noticed it that way before..." |

I tend to agree with the ratings offered, maybe 5's but no more I'm afraid.
Reasons:
1st image, the red hydrant - sort of at a strange 'just off' angle, dof has left the background only just out of focus, with the rebel you should be able to get a good blurred background to give dramatic effect. Also the hydrant looks a little oversharpened, theres a strange white border to the hydrant.
2nd image, nice object spoiled by you other inclusions in the frame. A half included drain cover, two blurred blue bags, and a distracting line of weeds at the road edge. Maybe take the shot in less harsh light and take a little more care with the surrounding elements.
3rd image, cones - nice idea, but the viewpoint is the standard 'standing from eyelevel shot. Commonplace objects need an uncommon viewpoint to make something of them. Also harshly lit. Morning/evening low angled light adds so much to an image.
4th image, same viewpoint as image 3, need to get an unusual angle. Theres a very distracting black triangle in frame at the top - once again you need to be careful about whats in frame when you take the shot.
5th image, salt/pepper - nicely lit, definitely the best of the crop, but bland, no WOW, nothing to make it jump.
I hope you take this the right way, I'm not trying to destroy your ego, just hoping to let your eyes see what mine see on first view. Its always hard to see whats recorded and not what was intended.
Hope that helps

This was my backup plan: probably a 3-4 compaired to what my other picture is scoring.
