I already did shed a tear since I paid for his membership. :(

Ah no.

Now THAT truly sucks. You buy a membership for someone, and they abuse it. Hope you get a refund.

can't there be some sort of program that weeds out some of this stuff and won't even let you post a shot that is not kosher- kind of like if you tried to post a 1000px x1000px shot that is 500mb, it would even take it. can't the exif data be examined and pre-refused?

There has to be some sort of software to detect it, either that or some dual submission of the original file with the entry. Is there anyway to submit the original just not at high res, large file, to clear it up from the get go?

Exif data can be read with javascript or php, I'm not sure why this hasn't been implemented TBH, even if only to help fill in the form fields on the submissions page. Maybe SC could (or does, who knows...) have it displayed when they look at challenge entries or even better just a script that compiles a list of suspicious entries for them. Not foolproof I know, but it'd surely make the job easier for them.

Three things come to mind regarding uploading of EXIF data with a challenge entry:

1) File size would change and we're already squeaking by at 300kb (not that EXIF data is that large but every little bit makes a difference).

2) Personally, I leave my GPS tracker on all the time which shows up in EXIF...I'd hate to have to remember to toggle that off & on all the time.

3) Considering that this site recently made changes to help keep entries more anonymous (not updating comment counts while in voting, etc..) I can see where people would then start trying to figure out who an image belonged to by checking EXIF details all the time. Crazy I know, just saying.

1) Adjusting the allowable file size to account for EXIF would not be difficult.

2) I don't understand why this is a concern, but see below

3) It would be easy enough to have the EXIF data removed from the images displayed on the site, in challenges, etc.

Of course, there are a host of other site improvements that have been suggested.

Riley?

LOL! No. Riley only recently learned how to hack the Parental Controls on the Wii to purchase games online. He hasn't made it to EXIF hacking yet.

reading his post about getting loads of browns and looking at his portfolio i though he might be more than one person, there is a definite change in his protfolio from taking good pics to very average ones and one of his portfolio photos is 3 guys with cameras, listed as having a 5d mk11 but recent photos on a rebel?? maybe over suspicious hehe

His stupid move does not in any way diminish your very generous act.

You already cannot upload an entry which is larger than 800x800 or >300KB. Those values are not dependent on analyzing the EXIF data ...

good catch, I actually meant "wouldn't" as in the site does not allow the uploading of a file to big, too large, etc- couldn't SC automate the validation of other crucial elements? I mean, we have iphones that talk to us and order sushi for us now- we can't weed out some of the early DQ's?

SC can't program anything -- we have no access to the code, as if that would help any ...

Now, if you are suggesting that the entire programming department over at Apple is willing to donate their time to set up some much-requested site modifications, I suggest you inform Langdon of this marvelous act of philanthropy right away ...

I think we should just go back to the basics...play by the damn rules, and then we won't have to start programming new things for the site, lol!

Fortunately the majority of us do that, and even if we could cheat we wouldn't. If there were an undetectable way to cheat I'm guessing that only a fraction of a percent would even attempt it.

(If anybody wants to know that undetectable method, send me a stack of crisp $100 bills and it's all yours!)

I've learned a long time ago not to suggest anything, except as a question, in passing, in jest, "what if." If its so difficult or pointless to do that it was stupid to ask, then, strike that, I withdraw the question, my bad.

He promised to send me a Nepalese Bride. :P

Que sera sera. I'm a sucker for spontaneous charity and probably always will be. Does sting a bit, though.
