Hi All,

So I am finally replacing my four year old MacBook Pro with a new one I just ordered. When I started with the original Lightroom it seemed snappy and quick, but with subsequent versions and as my catalog grew larger using Lightroom with my aging computer became a huge lesson in patience that I just don't have time for.

So the new computer will be quite quick with a quad-core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a discreet 1MB GPU. I'm not going with an SSD just yet, but will at least have a 72K spinning HD. At some point I will either place a SSD internally instead of having a DVD drive or put a SSD in the normal slot and use a Thunderbolt connected external for media storage.

If I set things up on the new computer exactly as I have things set now on my current one I will no doubt notice a huge increase in speed. But maybe at this point I should set things up for continued responsiveness as my 400GB catalog gets even larger.
So currently I have just one relatively large catalog. I have heard people stating splitting up a large catalog into multiple catalogs makes Lighroom more responsive, has anyone found this to be true? If multiple catalogs would be a good idea, I could probably break them up into years. If I do this, would it make searching for keyword tags a pain though? Or could I still search for images tagged with "abstract" for instance all at once without having to open multiple catalogs?

I'm confused about what difficulties might arise with multiple catalogs and could use some advise on whether I should just export my one bigish current catalog to the new computer or divide it up into years? Any help would be much appreciated!

I am no LR expert but can you have multi cats for each of the years and then create a master and export JUST the previews from each and import those only?? I thought I saw someone do that as a solution.

I have a large cat and just deal with it's slowness because I don't want to break it up (but I split the software, cat, cache and images to different drives, so it's not as bad as my old machine still).

Well you sound more Lightroom expert than me Rob! Thanks ;)

On my current system I import new images to internal HD and after a month or so transfer them over to an external firewire 800 drive (keeping everything in one catalog). I want to develop good habits for a future with many more images, but maybe not at the expense of making the system more complicated.
Since my new computer will be much faster than my old one, maybe it would make sense to continue with one easy to access catalog and deal with possibly breaking things up into multiple catalogs in the future? Also, I'm thinking future versions of LR might handle really large catalogs more efficiently thus saving the need to break things up as my catalog increases in size?

Will probably keep one catalog for now...
