so looking for feedback see what if anything i did wrong, im not precious all i want to do is get better so be as harsh as you like i really dont mind

so two recent challenges and maybe im in the wrong here,

a vote of 1 is something that doesnt fit the challenge or a blurred mobile phone shot of nothing maybe think i have only given 4 or 5

a 10 is the best picture youve seen, i vote mainly from 4-9 if its in focus exposed correct and fits challenge then that a 5 etc

i thought 5-6 were ok scores for these reinforced by the average score and was chuffed with the places, but are the 1s,2s,3s just anomalies or tactical voting or are they just crap photos?

very flattered with the 10's though hehe :)

so two recent challenge

Even the best entries will get some low votes that don't seem deserved to most of us. Various reasons but rarely will you find out. Some possible reasons:

-Offended at anything sexual in nature
-Voter uses the voting scale as a ranking system, distributing the votes evenly from 1-10, and you fell in their bottom 20%, so got a 1 or 2.
-Something in the image they object to and the low vote is a moral or political statement, rather than a reflection on your photography of it.
-Tactical voting
-Technically perfect but no story or message gets a 1 or 2.
-Conveyed a negative emotion or creeped them out.
-A genre the voter just does not like (For example, abstracts can be a hard sell sometimes.)

When asking yourself 'did my image deserve this score?' the best thing to do is look at the three winning images. Ask yourself what you think of the technicals and the execution, and most importantly if they're *interesting* or not.

Your second photo isn't really that interesting. It looks like a product shot, or something you saw in the corner of your shed and took a snapshot of just to get an entry in. There's no story to it, and it doesn't hold the viewer's attention.

So once you've looked at the winning photos, look back at your photo and ask 'did I deserve to be on the front page? Is my shot 'better' than these three? What position did I really deserve?'

I just checked what scored I gave.

I gave the "pink one" a 6 typo, it was a 7. I liked the idea, and I like boobs (even though I am creeped out now that I know it was a maniquin)I would have scored it higher if that *headboard* on the left wasn't so distracting, and in it is an orb or something that should have been cloned out. At the time I didn't know it was a maniquin, but I was thinking some of her neck showing might help too. Looks like her head was cut off.

As far as the subject goes, great clarity, nice DOF and the sel. desat was on spot.

For the "knob" I gave it a 4. Did nothing for me. My eyes don't know where to settle. Should they fix on the "6D"? Nah, it's out of focus, maybe the slot? Eh, just not interesting...

I think every new person on DPC asks themselves this question. I know I did many times when I was new, I think I remember getting a PM from bear_music at the time, kind of half scolding and half explaining why I might have gotten some 1's. Now I just expect it, even the ribbon winners often get at least 1 or more scores of 1-3.

Try not to worry about the low scores, instead look at the ones in the middle ask yourself why did I get so many 5's? A 5 score is almost worse in my book than a 1. A 5 score means that you did okay but your shot didn't inspire anyone really. (not trying to pick on you, I have many many shots that fall in this category)

They are both technically sound photos but when the viewer looks at them what sets them apart from the rest? The pink one is a bit better and does have more meaning to me and in my mind should have done better. But the coin slot is just one of many like it in the challenge, but don't feel too bad I don't think anyone did well in that challenge.

thanks for the replies didnt think about ppl being offended by a bra but i guess you are right, haha yeah someelse asked who the model was and said she was "fit" till i told him hehe

the coin one was simply me thinking it was more the DPC look, and it was a bit quirky being i shoot with a 5d and it said 6d...

i had 3 choices for the coin slot and debated for a while they were

//www.flickr.com/photos/cyberprop/sets/72157627748667643/

this is the one i rated the highest in aperture then uploaded the other one

this was also a contender but thought ppl would think its not a coin slot

re about the winners i loved the second place one in the coin slot and the third and fourth all scored 7-9s the winner i gave a 4, thought it was artificial and to forced and contrived (well aware of the irony in my complaint here, that hed be thinking who gave my winning shot a 4 lol) but taste is subjective to a degree i guess.

but this sites got me taking a lot more pictures thinking more and more about shots, spending an awful lot more money hehe but also having a great time so im pleased, p.s out of the pink managuin shot ive got 3 female 'friends' who want lingerie esq pictures doing now so result.

JH i'm liking what you are saying about a story so maybe this one, showing a hard life and old, cracked glass indented wheres it been hammered by something, old glue from bill posters etc

think thats definetly something to work on more

be nice if people commented more, if i give a bad score or a good score i say why i did it, has it ever been like mandatory comments on say 10% etc from the stats commentators scored them ok, where as id rather have comments from the low scores
