Does anyone know anywhere that has an online photography degree program (and is accrediated), other than Academy of Art University in San Francisco? And, does anyone have any comments on this school? Thanks for your help!

I can't think of any better education than what you'll learn right here over time. A photographer's portfolio is far more important than a degree. There are at least a dozen photographer here that I would hire in a heartbeat- with or without certification. |

Are someone that would be hiring a photographer, though (being a photographer yourself)? I am not knocking what you are saying, and I am doing my share of self teaching (trust me!), and learning online, and so forth, but I think that I need and want more. I am going to be taking some courses, and think that I may just go to a community college nearby to get some more classes. I think that a degree (even if it is just an associates) lends some creditability to a self-run business (which is what I will be, and have been, striving for). Thank you for the reply, though, and I definately am using the site, and the people in it for guidance and assistance (why do you think that I posted this thread? :) )

INTERVIEWER: So, what qualifications do you have that are useful to a Photojournalist?
INTERVIEWEE: Well, I talk heaps on this really great website. Is that enough?
INTERVIEWER: Right.... ... ... ... NEXT!

College courses in photography are good for improving your technical background, but they won't help you sell pictures. A photographer, like any other artist, is hired for talent, not for credentials. I say this as a designer who graduated Summa Cum Laude from a top design school. Nobody cares or even asks- they just want to see my portfolio. I have been hired as a photographer on occasion by people who have seen my photos, and not one of them has ever asked about my education. Of all the things on a photographer's walls, a diploma is the least important. Good luck! |

Why yes, actually. I've been retouching photos all day from a photographer we hired last week. I've got another photo shoot with him tomorrow. I didn't think to ask him where he went to college. ;-) |

I think it's a good idea to go to school not so much for the photography degree, but for the experience of the feedback a professional can give you. Either that or join a photography club in your neighborhood. And go to the library and take out every imaginable book on photography and read lots online, and of course, be a part of DPC. |

I have already done all that :) (the club, and the library- I am a regular :), and I am online all the time) And, I have taken one photography course (a while back), and would be taking the other photography courses for the technical background. I was just going to take the "photography" courses, but was thinking the degree would help.

I'm currently participating in a home study course with New York institute of Photography... //www.nyip.com It's very basic, going way back to film (although they have a new digital course)
It's very reasonable, and I needed brushing up on the basics and I've learned alot...I wasn't too interested in the weight their degree carries, since I too, agree it's the portfolio that matters.
I did want to learn it all...and so far, I am half way through...and I'm happy Email me if you want more info! |
