Hi all,

I was looking for a cheap macro lens for my Sony Alpha, but have read a lot about using a reversing ring to use for example my existing portrait lens. I further read of course that this route loses the ability to stop down the aperture and whatnot and other people were advocating the use of older lenses with a manual aperture ring. This the led me to posts regarding older M42 thread mount lenses and the fact that many of these lenses can be picked up very cheaply.

So, I spent £10 on getting myself a converter from alpha mount to M42, and then for good measure spent an extra £10 on a brand new M42 mount vivitar 2x telecoverter (just because it seemed like a bargain). Just looking for a nice cheap M42 macro now.

But while I am looking, I find a Mamiya Sekor 200mm f/3.5 Prime for what seems like a bargain price, and seemingly in excellent condition. My mind tells me that it's fast enough to get away with coupling it with my 2x teleconverter as a cheap way of getting a 400mm focal length (certainly faster than my kit zoom telephoto which at 200m has f5.6 as the fastest). I guess I'll be looking at f/8 at 400mm on the Mamiya Sekor + 2x teleconverter

Anyone using the M42 route as a way to play around with old lenses? Any top advice?

Thanks
Lawry

I'm pretty sure with the reversing adapter you can still set your aperture. You just have to do it in manual mode with the lens attached the normal way and then flip it.

Lots of folks do this, especially in Canon Land. I have the Carl Zeiss 75mm f/1.5 Biotar In M42 Mount as well as a Peleng 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye MC In M42 Mount. I've had a Pentax 50/1.7 in M42 mount in the past as well.

I have had the best bang for my buck buying anything Komine made rebadged for Vivitar, (serial #'s start with 28). The MFlenses website is a great source of information, though occasionally you have to cut through the hyperbole. My best advice would be that you get what you pay for when it comes to the adapters, they're not all created equal. It's no fun doing emergency camera surgery when one gets stuck in your camera when you're out in the field.

Check out the Sony/Minolta/KM forums over at Dyxum.com. Here's one specifically on M42 conversations.
