Pffft. They don't trust me with an RPG, all I got was a box cutter and a suicide vest.

Probably a smart move on their part. I heard about that little "training" incident you had in Waziristan...poor Achmed. I hear they still find little bits and pieces every now and then.

Awww, guys, you're going at it all wrong. Don't go into that shopping mall with your honking big lens!

go in with your little point and shoot and hold it funny (here are basic and advanced examples).
If you think you can pull it off, ask the guard "just where is that go button on this thing, anyhow?"

Heh, heh. This one came in pretty nicely in a recent challenge.

sfalice that advice probably works some of the time, but the guy in the story that started all this took photos of his daughter using a mobile phone.

Gina, yeah, I know the whole business is absurd. I could make a crack about the guy who used a 'honking big mobile phone' but you know and I know this whole thing is silly and belongs in the just completed "nonsense" challenge.

What can we do about it? Find the humor and the pathos and "DO" something about the silliness. Even this discussion elevates the awareness of this strange issue that needs the (forgive me) exposure.

And, yes, as an aside, I have been chased away from a building where (gasp) I went into their parking lot to admire and photograph the architecture! The guard gave me the address of an adjacent property where I could get my shots.

'Admire'.. really? - Sounds a bit al-queda-ish if you ask me... ;-)

Anyway, the photographer in the shopping center did do something about it. He started a facebook campaign, got picked up by the media, and created such a fuss about it that the shopping centre had to publish an apology and change their policy on photography.

It is a greater problem in the world, people with power and responsibility, but little actual knowledge or useful training put into a position of management.
Since their bosses are even more distanced and higher up the management chain, they mainly worry about looking like the company cares. Reacting is best.
They have to do something, and something different than the last manager, or they won't be seen as "managing" so the foolish orders start to flow.

I'm sure they fired the last security manager when a incident that no one could have foreseen happened, which is upper management showing it cares and is upper managing, so the new security manager has to make large visible changes to show his new initiative to deal with a past threat even though they are ignoring the developing security scene. More than likely management will get changed after this ice-creme incident, and that newest manager will make changes to show they are on top of the situation!

This gets repeated daily over different levels of management, pure reactionary tactics and distractive policies that are as effective as "anti-tiger-rocks"
(mine have worked flawless so far, $25,792 spent on anti-tiger-rocks and not a single tiger attack yet!!)
