Well, that's certainly not required by the challenge description, which basically just says "let's shoot pink in honor of...", not "go shoot images that bring attention to breast cancer research" or whatever. Have you noticed how the football teams all are wearing pink shoes and have pink towels etc this month? And the refs have pink whistles? It's like that; anything pink, on display to the world, is hopefully gonna make people think about fighting breast cancer. This is the goal of the PR people behind the campaign, and they've been quite brilliant at making it happen.

Now, what I sincerely hope is that Langdon follows through BY PAINTING THE SITE PINK at rollover, and for the rest of the month; where we have blue bars now, make 'em pink and dusky rose and so forth :-)

R.

All of that pink stuff used in NFL games is going to be auctioned off to benefit charity (I believe the American Cancer Society).

so now i need to decide whether i want to be a part of a PR campaign?...

i am all for promoting health awareness and charity, but i was really pissed off when i heard that one of the breast cancer groups was suing (or threatening to sue) another group for using "for the cure" in their campaign slogan... so now they are all about protecting their "brand" and not really about promoting cures for the sick!

/end rant/

There really needs to be a blue for ball cancer campaign. The DPC site's already painted and hey, we can all walk around with a blue sock on!! Can you imagine what those walks for the cure would look like?

Imagine the slogans... Save the Family Jewels! Kick cancer in the balls!

And just imagine the emotional trauma of losing a ball to cancer??? Where's the men's survival stories? Where's the support people?!?!?!

I'm ready for the men's suffrage movement to begin. Rise up men, stop wearing skirts and take back the night!! What do we want? Equal Rights... When do we want it? Now!!!

haha!!

Ya, Im not much of a fan of the Komen Foundation's heavy handed attacks on other charities, sending serious money suing other charities because they feel they own the term "for the cure" and the sole ownership of the color pink in any fundraising event.

They have done a great job of raising awareness of breast cancer, but I have trouble supporting even this good an organisation when I know some of my money will go to suing other charities.

I was badly startled to read this information, and the article Brennan posted.

So startled that I checked out the Komen site, found a "contact us" page and used the only appropriate heading for my note, Report Improper Conduct. My note follows:

"I have just become aware that the Susan G Komen for the Cure has been actively suing those who use "for the cure" or even the color "pink" in their own charitable work. Not only is this, in my opinion, a misuse of donated funds for a cancer cure, it is conduct detrimental to those who also have concerns about health matters. These are simple words which should continue to be in the public domain. Let's let the legal folks work on matters that matter and use donated funds to actively work for your stated purpose: to find a cure for breast cancer.

"I wish it was not necessary to write this email."

In fairness to the Komen foundation, I just received the following response to my email of yesterday.
:

Thank you for writing to us. We re-evaluated our position this spring and have since dropped several trademark oppositions and decided not to pursue others, mindful always of our concern that people donating to a âfor the Cureâ event should know who they are donating to. Weâll continue to evaluate trademark filings on a case-by-case basis with that issue top of mind. This is why we protect our âfor the Cureâ marks â to avoid donor confusion.

We have no interest in impeding the work of other charities. In fact, we fund about 2,000 other community organizations in the United States and partner with cancer and advocacy groups in more than 50 countries. Our sole goal in protecting our trademarks is to ensure that people know who they are donating to, especially if their intent is to donate to Susan G. Komen through a âfor the Cureâ event.

Media reports around this issue have been exaggerated, leaving the impression that we sue other charities and spend huge sums to do so. The reality is that we achieve amicable resolutions in these cases, and we have spent significantly less than the $1 million reported in an early news story.

Sincerely,

Susan G. Komen for the Cure

well, that's good news. my best friend works for a company that does business with Komen (i think in fundraising) and didn't even know about the controversy. he was a bit bummed out when i sent him the link to the Huffington Post post. i am glad to be able to let him know Komen has apparently mended their ways.

i have a policy of not giving to any charity unless at least 50% of the money recieved goes to actual frontline help

alot of charrities including the big ones have operating costs at something like 85% so all the money they receive doesnt go to research grants or starving orphans in the horn of africa its goes to pr people or desk jockeys.

and what really boils my blood in the uk is the gangs of slogan sporting tshirted people that descend on your street and try and guilt trip you into donating, when they say so do you give to charity with mock alarm i ask them "are you getting paid" yes, "do you give to this charity" erm no, erm yes erm.... how muchof donated money actual makes it to the frontline... erm im not sure on that....

i mean paying money to collect money..... its all jobs for the boys

i give to where its going to make a difference, that case above is appalling "for the cure" surely that should be everyones moto
