How 'bout a challenge where the objective is to showcase one's Digital Darkroom skills. The photo entries would have to include a pre- and post-processing composite, like its been done here:

The goal would be to enhance the raw photo, but not to process it to the point where it appears "un-natural."

I like it, but the pure-photo folks would rebel (not the good kind) with torches and pitchforks. That's more about Photoshop than Photography- a major taboo around here. Those with Photoshop CS and a retouching background would likely stomp all over the camera-only enthusiasts. The gray line where a photo becomes unnatural would cause mayhem in the voting, too.

speaking of rebellion....tehehee...

I think this would be interesting but I also think people would stand pretty unequal in this.
Many compact camerast cannot produce raw-photos and some photographers here dont have an easy acces to advance photoediting programs.
You could say that people dont stand equal in other challenges either because of different cameras. But for good photographers there is much better change of shooting a good image with a low price camera than doing a good post editing with a lousy editing program.

Even if this doesn't become a 'challenge' I would love to see other (proud) members display before and after shots like this -well done bdobe. I don't suppose there are many images on dpc that have not been altered in one way or another. And for those that quickly post unaltered images to prove me wrong it will have to be a raw or 35mm image.

Ben, the transition between pics is awesome, please don't tell me you did it in 5 minutes, and what made you see the final image from such an 'average' shot?

Actually it was probably about 10 minutes, hehe :P
It's not all that much done really. I just dodged and burned until I liked the look of it. Then that messed up all the colours so I made it sepia. I didnt really have a vision as such. If there wasnt a challenge I would have just thrown the pic away but I really wanted to submit something so I had to pick the best of the worst and make it as good as I could, which I'm glad I did now :) I liked the scene when I took the shot but the sun was right behind so the exposure was tricky. It was a very very busy day at the seafront so I only managed to get 1 shot because there were people getting in the way for the rest of them.
Try dodging and burning the original yourself, you'll be amazed how easy it is to get the same result. I used quite a small brush for the bandstand and ground areas, and a reaaally big feathered brush for the sky, to make the top seem darker.
