I guess it's a good thing Amanda Knox was in Italy, and not a "guest" of the great state of "Hang 'Em High!" Texas ... :-(

How do we determine "biggest"? Who are you talking about specifically? Anyway, if your point was to state that the juxtaposition between Christianity and Capital punishment is interesting because of an apparent contradiction, I would have recommended leaving the comment about "a good public stoning". it's only inflammatory. I would have actually agreed with your point as your reposted.

Many of the most greedy people in the world are lawyers.

What do you think the implications of this statement are if you read it?

Just be more careful with what you write. 'nuff said.

I am a bit slow, but it might sound like you are surreptitiously calling me a weasel as well as an outright ad hominem with the anti-lawyer stuff (to prove the point-I get it!) I may not be careful with what I said, but read the whole thread for context! -Its all good though, no worries- I forget what we were arguing about. like you say, " 'nuff said."

Lawyers and Christians probably have similar reputations here in the bizarro Rant world so we're sitting in the same boat... ;)

Having a religion is like having a penis.

If you have one, that's great.

If you're proud of it, that's great too.

It's when you start waving it around in my face or stuffing it down my kid's throat that it's not OK.

You're the one who brought up religion.

Ummm right.

The jury found that she didn't commit the crime on her first appeal. (Note: The jury on her appeal didn't find there wasn't enough evidence to convict her, they said she didn't commit the crime.)

The inmates on death row get appeal after appeal. The process goes on for so long that 25% of death row inmates die of natural causes. Troy Davis had been filing appeals for 20 years, some wait well over 30 years.

Ummm right.

I was trying to be a bit tongue-in-cheek ... right about the time I was reading the thread the radio was plaing a clip of Governor Perry answering a question to the effect of "Texas has executed 234 people -- more than any other state. How do you feel about that?" with "Right -- hang 'em high!"

A assume by that he wants the gallows to be tall enough for the public to get a good view. Maybe next week he'l propose bringing back the gibbet ...

Funny the stuff that turns up when you get started looking for something else. I stumbled on the article that pushed me off the fence on capital punishment. A wide ranging national study done at Columbia law school in 2000 found that the rate of error found in appeals in death penalty cases ranged from 100 percent in three states -- Kentucky, Maryland and Tennessee -- and 91 percent in Mississippi, to 18 percent in Virginia. In fact, 24 of the 26 states with the death penalty where there have been fully completed appeals had an error rate of 52 percent or higher, the report said. The study, an examination of appeals in all capital cases from the time the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty, in 1976, to 1995, also found that 75 percent of the people whose death sentences were set aside were later given lesser sentences after retrials, in plea bargains or by order of a judge. An additional 7 percent were found not guilty on retrial.

That was what made me a death penalty opponent, any system that gets it wrong more than half the time should not be making life or death decisions. Whatever your views, it is an interesting study, give it a look.

This is in today's news. Thankfully, he didn't get the death penalty since it's in Texas.
