Ah yeah! That's sweet. I love the three dimensional nature of them as they reach into the heavens.

The Auroras are such a beautiful phenomenon. They never cease to amaze me.
People who actually have the chance seeing them are so lucky to me.

For those of you who like this kind of stuff, I highly recommend subscribing to NASA's Earth Observatory mailing list -- a weekly email with links to that week's IOTDs and recent articles/announcements. As a bonus, all of the high-resolution pictures are available for download, if you want to print them or incorporate them into your own (non-commercial) works.

IOTD for 9/22/11

FWIW the current hardware on the ISS is a Nikon D2Xs, with (I think) 180mm and 400mm (and some other) lenses ... avoiding motion blur when you're in free-fall and moving at about 1800 MPH is pretty tricky ... :-)

Multiply that 1800mph figure by 10. The ISS travels at an average ground speed of 27,724 km (17,227 mi) per hour, completing 15.7 orbits per day, according to Wikipedia.
