My 5D MKII hunts for focus when the centre point is selected - all lenses; other focus points seem to be fine.

Clean the sensor? Or is it something else?

Thanks

Paul

It can't have anything to do with the sensor, because that's not involved in AF at all.

Dirt on the mirror?

That's a possibility... any piece of junk big enough to affect AF would be easily visible with the lens removed, so easy enough to verify. Could be an actual problem with that AF sensor. If so, that's a bummer.

When I say it hunts, not like proper hunting on my long macro but flicks backwards and forwards rapidly around the in focus area.

Do you have it set to servo focus? Sometimes I forget I have it set to that and wonder why I never get the beep for focus.

have you taken a look at your focus screen, just to see if dirt is visible (the little screen on the inside of the body toward the view-finder side which the mirror slaps against)?

BTW, be careful with the focus screen. Fluids can ruin it, and dirt is more easily accumulated on it than removed from it :-)

You know it might be - I'll check in the morning.

I do this frequently. Drives me nuts. I also forget to switch the lens back to autofocus from manual.

Paul...mine hunts frequently in low light despite using 2.8 and faster primes, worse with the outer points. In fact, the only time the AF is fast is with extremely bright light and my 100mm f/2.8L. AF is definitely not a strength, but it rarely bothers me.

Just saw this post. I experience this with the AI Servo mode.

Seems like I had that problem when I tried using a non L lens.

Ahem.... I seem to recall an individual on this site who sought assistance on matters such as mechanical problems, electrical issues, relocating trees and there might be others.

Gather round folks... Hehehehe

Have a great day Doc.

Hehe. Guilty as charged. Zing!

I'm curious as to if this was the problem.

Indeed! AF Servo was the issue. Thanks for the advice. :-)
