That's what mine is set to do and what I want it to do. The camera clearly thought something was in focus, but there was nothing at the focal distance it shows, not even at the edge of the frame.

Set that cam up again on the tripod. Use your autofocus...zoom in...zoom out...do everything except move that cam.
Use timer release and shoot 20 pics of a natural NON MOVING subject like a fire hydrant or mailbox

By natural...I mean something other than a grid or such.

See what results.

Thanks for your interest, Tiny. I haven't had time to do any serious tests though I took some handheld shots of textured walls outside today, as well as tripod-mounted shots of some of the trees (bonsai in training) that I was pruning. I haven't downloaded to the computer yet, but on the camera screen they look okay. I would really like to find something at home that my 7D struggles with so that I can try the same shot with my 400D and see how it reacts. Unfortunately none of the totally unfocused shots I've posted have been taken at home, so I can't repeat them.
