Saw this in Miami the other day. Seems like a rather odd plane - just curious, thought I'd post it up.

Very odd paint job. But it got your attention, right?

Clearly... black helicopters are only short term transportation, so there needs to be black planes for cross country trips :-)
No idea.... |

Probably a Boeing 727. The angle of the photo foreshortens the image making it look shorter than the classic 727. If so, it would have aftermarket winglets at the tips of the wings, so it's not a 'stock' 727.

That's how they transport all of the M-16's the US gives them back to Mexico so the weapons can be sold to the drug cartels.

Cory, that area is where all of the non-airline aircraft park and you often see some interesting aircraft there.
You would have liked to have seen this L1011 when I saw it about ten years ago.
When I saw it up close it was waxed brilliantly and was extremely glossy. It was definitely an impressive sight that simply spoke of wealth. I didn't get a picture of it, though. I found this picture and other great shots here. Take a look. |

what is that "guns to mexico" thing I've been seeing? I'm usually up on things but this didn't perk my ears up. I believe I heard "fast and deadly" fast and something"....I'm pretty sure it was fast, im not sure of the other word.

Just google "Operation Fast and Furious" or "Operation Gunrunner"
Basically, the ATF decided it would be a good idea to knowingly let straw buyers in states bordering Mexico purchase weapons and take them back across the border. When the gun store owners/employees called the ATF to report a suspiscious sale, they were told to go ahead and make the sales. The idea being that ATF agents would track the guns, despite not having the method or the resources to do so. The agents did nothing more than watch the straw buyers take the guns back into Mexico. Personally, I don't know what the Hell they were thinking that selling a couple thousand weapons to the drug cartels would help disarm them... Anyway, the whole mess was pretty much kept under wraps until some of the ATF agents in the field blew the whistle and one of the guns was tied to the murder of a Federal Border Patrol Agent. I believe there were other instances where these weapons were tied to murders after the fact, but I can't say off the top of my head. Of course, neither the White House
nor the leaders at the DOJ know anything about what was really going on.
The other thing is that the US supplies most of the Mexican Army's and Federal PD's weaponry, including M-16's, grenade launchers and other fun toys which are not available to civilians here in the U.S. The Mexican government has lots of these weapons and given the corruption within these organizations, it's not exactly uncommon for them to wind up in the hands of the drug cartels.
So, when the Mexican president says that the weapons used by the drug cartels to massacre Mexicans come from the United States, I don't think he's lying. It's just not coming from legitimate sales here in the US, it's coming straight from the US Government.

My favorite part of the "fast and furious" debacle was the "oops" moment when they realized that the batteries in the trackers they put on all the guns which was going to allow them to follow them and track all the bad guys who bought the guns, was not rated in days as they had assumed, but in hours. The trackers were dead by the time they crossed the border. A classic RTFM moment. |

This is kind of unbelievable....so they really DID NOT have a way to track? Or...did the "WAY" break down at some point?

They don't track the military/police weapons...aside from the serial number.
Read BrennanOB's post below. Evidently, from what I've read, the ATF placd tracking devices in 6 of the ~2000 weapons, but the devices went dead after a few hours.
It's not kind of unbelievable...it's our government at work.

It's almost like they want the Mexican's to THINK the tracking devices don't work....but I guess that's really to hard to believe !
