I've always been a fan of the old Northgate keyboards...loved the layout, loved the feel. Solid construction. Alas, all good things eventually come to an end.

After trying some expensive northgate "work-alikes", I finally gave up (the last one I had was pretty good, but didn't last).

In the last year, I actually managed to adapt to a HP Wireless keyboard that came with one of my computers (well, I probably paid a bit for it...) I grew to like the feel, even though it didn't have my ideal layout.

But it just failed. They just don't make things like they used to...my Northgate keyboards survived heavy use for 10+ years.

Anyway, here are my needs:

1) Good feel. I spend a lot of time at the computer, and I'm more or less a touch typist (never trained, but I use the computer so much, my fingers just know where everything is)
2) MUST have: numeric keypad with Arrows and Home/End/Pgup/PgDown as usual. I don't care for the in between T arrows and never use them. Drove me mad while I had a Mac...
3) Wireless is ok, especially if the battery life is good.
4) I liked having the mute and volume buttons on the HP keyboard; that would be great. Not required, but would be nice.

Anyway, I've been looking through the Amazon reviews, but they always seem to have incredibly diverse opinions--Greatest Keyboard Ever / Piece of Crap.

So show me one you love!

It's a shame Northgate didn't survive. I bought one back in the late early 90's. Built like a tank. I may still have it on a shelf in the garage. Might have one key that doesn't work right. Can't bear to part with it, even though it won't work on my current computer. (I suppose I could find an adapter or modify it if I really wanted. The very loud keys would drive my wife nuts.) If you could use it to fix yours, let me know.

Here's what I like to use at home It's part of a set with an ergonomic mouse, but I don't use the mouse that came with it. It uses AA batteries, which I have only had to replace once or twice a year. I've used a wavy keyboard like this for years, but know it is not to everyone's liking. I have the wired version of it on my PC at work.

Logitech Wave 2.4 Keyboard and Mouse combo

You used the right words...I love this keyboard. It has everything that you asked for. I've had it for four months and as much as I use it I haven't had to replace the batteries in the keyboard yet. The mouse is rechargeable and I've had to recharge it twice for about an hour. The mouse is usable while it is charging.

+1 for this set.

I have been using this for over 2 years at work and love it! Mouse is very well designed.

I've had a couple keyboards from //www.daskeyboard.com/ that I really like (e.g. S Professional Keyboard - Wired). I originally got them because on some models the keys are blank (I use the Dvorak layout, so QWERTY markings are useless to me), but they also have a great feel to them. They're expensive, though. I'm not familiar with Northgate so I don't know how they compare (though I just noticed one of the Amazon reviews is titled "Northgate lives on"). On some models the keys click, much like the keyboards on the old IBM PC's from the 1980's--I personally find that annoying, but they have "silent" ones too. They also apparently have celebrity endorsements ("Glossy black upper enclosure with matching black USB cable Darth Vader approved".)
