I am always wondering, why similar challenges occur so often. Such as the lens flare challenge. Then followed by sun in frame. Lots of the shots in the flare challenge, showed the sun in frame. Most likely with the sun challenge, there will be lots of lens flare. This is not the first time I have noticed this trend. Can we not space these out a little. Just a thought for more variety. |

Seems like challenges often come in pairs.
What could go together with "Granular"? |

Here's a question for ya, just to be contrary:
How often do you suggest that baseball, football, basketball, and hockey should alternate weekends all year around so we don't have to watch the same sport back to back?
It seems to me there's an OK argument to be made FOR grouping challenges like this. In the present case, for example, people who were trying hard in the flare challenge can apply what they've learned in the sun-in-frame challenge. It makes perfect sense to me.
My gut reaction, I admit, was the same as yours. But I gotta be honest; it doesn't seem like all that bad an idea when I get over feeling annoyed. In fact, I'll go on record and say it's a GOOD idea; we ought to have MORE back-to-back similar challenges, not fewer :-)

I was a little surprised by the lack of variety as well, and how subjects this past month seem to have some heavy overlap. long exposure /____ at night, lensflare/shoot into the sun. I'm not quite buying that it's "good practice," so much as it is poor planning. To continue the sports analogy, what if the only football game for 2 months was the Bears vs the Raiders. You could watch these guys "practice" and learn each others playing style, but would it really be something you'd want to learn/watch for 2 months? I think your attitude towards the challenges is good, it's always best to find the positive in any poor situation (you admit frustration as well –also, I'm trying to not make this sound like a personal attack towards you, Robert), but I don't quite see why we (users) can't apply what we learned in "lens flare" and apply it in 6 months from now for "into the sun" – I just don't see a good reason for similar challenges being back-to-back like this. |

I don't take it personally at all. But out in the real world, that's how it is much of the time; learning is a seamless, ongoing process, we often need to, and get to, practice the skills we're developing immediately. I just don't see it as such a bad thing. But that's me, sunny-side up :-)

I left out the sunny side up because I am not feeling sunny side up at the moment due to the inability to see after all the suns I stared into - LOL - but the thing is, I agree that, for me, I forget what I learned until I apply it and I learned a lot during the flare challenge .. enough to know not to enter my pathetic shot but I am looking forward to getting something good for the sun in frame challenge.
It is scary though to be shooting into the direct sun with my brand new 7D.
