i decided to go a different rout and i probably like it better. I'd like to know in the future if we could included downloaded custom brushes if they were to be used to create effects.

As Judi said, no, you cannot. The reason for that is very simple and clear: brushes contain cliparts (for example eyelashes, hairs, wrinkles, etc.). If you want to use brushes, you'd have to create your own using photos taken within the challenge's week, as for every other part of your entry.
The only exception to that is textures, when they are actually used as such. For example, add a "leather" feel to a surface, a "canvas" aspect to your work, etc. But a texture must not add new distinguishable elements (such as, again, wrinkles, or even flames) or they become a clipart and would constitute a DQ case. |

i think the rule needs to be changed to include brushes so long as they are used to create an effect. say glowing trails or lighting elements, splatter effects, etc.
if we are allowed to use someone elses textures we should be allowed to use someones brushes.

Well since DPC is a photographer website, I would go the other way: simply disallow any external resource. After all, as a photographer, shooting a piece of paper, leather, or rocks shouldn't be too hard. That's what I usually do, since I don't like using any downloaded part anyway, it feels a bit like it's not entirely my image anymore. |

take a look at this site:
//www.1stwebdesigner.com/tutorials/high-quality-photo-effects-photoshop/
how many of these effects would we legal in expert editing if i dont make my own brushes? none.
when i see expert editing, one should read "Use Photoshop and go crazy, but make sure its still photography". i already got DQ'd once for pushing things too far and i wont get DQ'd this time, but my image would look way better if i could have used a downloaded brush instead of making do with what Photoshop had to offer by default.

Exactly! Just recreate the effect you like, chances are you will even learn some nice processing tricks while doing so. |

not bitching, i just question why one thing is allowed and another not? why can i download a texture which is a picture that someone else took, but not a brush someone else made?
just asking the powers that be to consider it. |

Unfortunately the powers that be have not participated in this thread. I sent them a ticket before this thread started, asking questions on whether i crossed the line in my expert edit. I did not get a response too. Just 2 houre before rollover now. No more time to make drastic changes. |

OK, I'm in for the Expert portrait challenge (even though I should have reshot it and spent more time editing to keep up with the competition that it will be facing)
Haven't really gone overboard with it but definitely needed expert to do this so it fits this challenge.
Fingers crossed for a reasonable score X X |
