Think I'm going to write a thank-you note to the creator of this site. They rock.

Lol. I like the name of that website.
Makes me think of my mother when she said I was so good when I first started...
She could have sworn some of my photos were top of the line. Lol! |

It's official...there are no professional photographers in Miami!
I love the idea behind this website and, so far, everything that I have been reading on it. They still seem to be in their formative stage, however, and currently don't have any Miami photographers listed as professional. Maybe I'll soon be the one and only ;)
I hope that they really get rolling and I can use them as a place to send potential clients to so they can have a better understanding of what makes a professional photographer a true professional and not a hack like I am seeing a lot of.
I am surprised at how well I am doing at making this difference clear to my new clients recently. They are accepting my rates, which I felt a little apprehensive about, and are extremely happy with. Still, it would be great to be able to point future clients towards an independent source like this. |

GET OUT OF MY MARKET!! ;)
Agreed, damn neat site, something I'll likely point people to on occasion. And there does appear to be a photographer somewhere in the Gables. :) |

Hey! You are just a visitor to MY market. You need to quit your trespassing habits and go back to New Mexico ;)
Actually, I don't mind the competition from real pros. There seems to be plenty of work if you put even a little effort into finding it.
What I don't like is having to point out to potential clients that as far as getting consistent results, you get what you pay for. I am seeing a lot of so called professional photographers here in Miami who are seriously undercutting the industry and doing it with really crappy work that, for some reason, a lot of people accept and actually applaud as good work.
After seeing that you found a photographer in Coral Gables, I went back and searched with my zip code instead of entering Miami, and I found that one photographer. |

second that. It is amazing. I went into a shoe store within the past 6 months and the person who checked out my items, said i looked like a model. (i'm surprised about how much i get that.) And so i said, "well, i actually prefere to behind the camera. I'm a photographer!" she asked how much i charged. well at that time, i didn't have business cards or a peresonal website or anything really, so i told her a very very very low price. She said, "WHAT?! my friend is a 'photographer' and she only charges $50 for us to do a photoshoot." Let me just say i was very shocked to hear that and said that that was very very very VERY cheap!!! she said that i was expencive. WHATEVER!!! lol anyways. i paid and left. I am continually shocked at peoples reactions when they hear 'high' prices for really good photographers.
(ok i'm done putting in my two cents...)

Not surprised at that sticker-shock reaction. Why is it that so many people think that photographers just want to shoot their event/portrait/wedding/whatever from the goodness of our hearts, and not expect to make a single penny in return?!
Now I feel a little hypocritical, cause I spent this past Sunday shooting at a horse show for free for almost 12 hours straight. 2200 frames, RAW and jpg fine. I gave out cards and have posted images, but oops guess what, the images are great but low res (400 on longest side) and have a big-ass PROOF ONLY stamped across them to deter theft. Made it clear that if people buy prints the lettering is removed, of course.
So far have yet to get anyone asking what a print would cost. And as many people rode at least 2 tests (it was a dressage show), I am doing a helluva lot of work, for so far...nothing. Nada. Zilch. And these are people with the money to blow on horses (basically hayburning luxuries) and showing...grrr...
OK rant over. |

Don't know if this is off topic or not, but in regards to pricing, people are spoiled to low prices, even from some "established" photography shops.
Over the years my wife has taken them up on offers for a family portrait setting (for the kids) and we'll get an 8x10, some wallets, and I think a 5x7 or two - for $9.99! These are in studio, backdrops, proper lighting, flawless photos. Of course, they hope that you'll buy into the packages they try to sell you that are more professionally priced, but you don't have to.
That's cheaper than for what I can print a set like that!
I know this is night and day from shooting a wedding, etc...but it's still something to think about when you see people react to pricing. |
