Well my phone's camera sucks. It's horrible, despite its 5 megapixel label. Over-contrasty, over-sharpened. Disappointing. That said, a lot of these also had some major filters applied. |

I've been using King Camera...built by a couple of enterprising DPC'ers. |

Just goes to show talent trumps equipment, but...
im sorry i just don't get all the iphone camera love. the pictures are noisy, many lacking in detail, and without the effects would be terrible. you can tell they are taken with a phone camera and used an app.
lots of talent behind some of them though and I'd love to used what they could do with a far superior sensor and lenses. |

As one who has dabbled, the point isn't to make technically superior images, it's to make images within the limitations of the camera at hand, and recognizing that those "defects" inherent in the process don't detract from the image, but add to it.
It's like the people who use obsolete processes and /or equipment...after all, why use something like wet plate collodion when you can use film...or even a digital back and create a technically "superior" image?

You mean like all the noise and lack of detail here, right?
I'm sorry, I just don't get the DSLR thing ... they're big, and heavy, so much so you never take them with you, ... and a lot of pictures are noisy and lack detail and without post processing would be terrible. You can tell they're taken with a DSLR and used Photoshop, or Lightroom, or Photomatix, or Silver Effects, or Nik or OnOne, or some other app.
In all seriosity ... there's a time and a place for both. And the camera you have with you trumps the one at home in the camera bag. Point: Camera Phone.
The trouble with camera phones is 80% operator and 20% phone ... and the 80% is exacerbated by alcohol, loud music or raging hormones*. Just saying.
* Not that there's anything wrong with alcohol, loud music or raging hormones. I like all those distractions. But they tend not to improve photographs. |

i just don't get the point of "look, i took this with my camera phone, isn't it great?" if its a great photo it will stand on its own, no matter what medium was used.
why brag about the fact that you took it with your iPhone? is it supposed to make you look like some great photographer becuase you use inferior gear or is just an advertisement for the iphone?

For the same reason we talk about the equipment we have used to create any image.
"Look! I took this with my giant DSLR and my 18-500 f2.8 L Zoom, isn't it great?"
As to the iPhone camera, or any camera really, being "inferior", that's a matter of opinion. Equipment of any sort may or may not be suited to the photographer's intended use. In many ways, my iPhone camera is far superior to my 5D mkII. It's far more portable and less obtrusive than any DSLR or even a P&S camera. Since I can set the metering and focus points independently (or together) by simply tapping the screen, it's both faster and easier to use that fiddling with dials and buttons or even focus/recompose. There are other advantages in terms of being able to post process and upload an image seconds after shooting it too.

The point of this isn't to say "this photo is good just because I took it with my iPhone", the point is that photography is becoming more mobile, widespread, and social network integrated. Witch is REALLY cool, and at the same time, a little disappointing, but I loved that article specifically, and it was a chance to safe some great photos and a great iPhone app by some great developers.
