Hi guys
I'm looking into buying a good zoom lens. Now I want something with more reach than a 200mm. What would be better... getting a good x-200mm lens and add a teleconverter or just get a x-300mm or x-400mm? I'll be using it mostly for nature shots.
I don't want to spend more than $800.
What I'm worried about is image quality with a teleconverter. Should I be?
Thanks!!

From my research it seems a 70-200 f/2.8 with a 2x TC should still produce good quality images. Of course that combo is going to cost you more than 800 likely. I've been looking at the 70-200 sigma that ranges between 600-700 dollars as an alternative to the 70-200 VR nikkor that is far far more.

Kos,
Not sure I can define both "good" and under $800 in a long reach tele-zoom. If you want sound solid reviews on Nikkor glass then try www.naturfotograf.com enter and scroll the left side for lenses. Open and find the category you are interested in. The 70-200 f/2.8 is regarded as a superb lense. rated a 5. Would expect it to be quite a bit more than $800.
Another option that is a fine piece of glass is the Sigma 50-500 EX. Will run a little more than $800 but worth it if you want the reach. On your D70 it translates into a 75-750. Wonderful range.
