That's right! Medicare in all there cost cutting glory sent me a check for 18¢. Let's see they paid 35¢ postage to send me the check. Another 10¢ to print the check and about 3¢ to type a letter explaining why I was getting money back. Then, since they were in a state of giving they include a prepaid return envelope (another 35¢) in case I wanted to appeal they're decision.
I think I will send mail to my senator and ask him to figure what it cost the government to send me 18¢.

Makes me wonder how many other checks they have sent out that cost them more to send than the person received. I say if the refund is less than $1 at least keep the money and the cost thereof and put it in the Medicare program. It may not make a big dent in the program but anything helps.

My 18¢ worth!

What's galling to me is that the feds *borrowed* the money (ok 43% of the money) that they wasted to pay you the eighteen cents. I agree with your idea that under a dollar doesn't warrant any action. I would also suggest that under $100 (or pick any arbitrary amount) shouldn't trigger an immediate payout to the consumer unless requested via email. Let those small amounts accumulate until they reach at least $100 (or $50 or whatever) before cutting a check.

Medicare bookkeepers, postal workers, check printers - they're all about job creation.

If they were a money making insurance plan they would have taken your premiums for 45 years, and when you needed treatment- they would have denied you, and dropped you from the plan. Its not perfect, but its better than Allstate.

Your missing the point. I'm not complaining about the coverage provided, I'm complaining about the waste. The 18¢ they sent me cost them at least them at least 83¢, cost the post office x dollars because they loose money delivering mail but we will leave the post office for another debate.

Just imagine all the money medicare could save if they didn't send out check that are less than there cost. I agree with nova; wait until the end of the year or when your refund is at a minimum to send out...say $100

With 65+ million people on medicare if they stopped sending out just one check to each recipient that was less than a $1.00, they would save over $65,000,000.00 in a year. Plus draw interest on another $65 million till the end of the year. And that just one rebate per person on medicare. No telling how many of these type checks some people get in a given year.
