So I guess I'm not 100% new here, having been around ~4 months, but aside from the odd message between myself and a few other members and the odd comment I've left on photos I think the majority of my social interactions so far have been in spamming my current score in the challenge threads... so I figure a formal "hi" and brief introduction are in order =).

I bought my first dslr about a week before discovering this site, and before then had never engaged in photography as a hobby/art form at all - it's actually something that had crossed my mind fleetingly several times through out my life, though I'd never got round to trying. Anyway, following various life events and a bad breakup that left me fairly depressed, and then a week-long visit to a friend of mine who's a cinematographer, it was retail therapy that led me to finally lay down ~£1000 on camera equipment, so I guess good things can come out of any low point in life =).

Since then I've been snapping whenever I get a free moment and loving it, and it was in searching for photography guides online right after getting my camera that led me here - and the standard of photography just blew me away, which, coupled with the constant and popular competitions and the friendly community is what's made me stay.

A few other things about myself, since this is an introduction:

I'm pretty disorganised as a person - my backlog of images in the 4 months I've been snapping is now at about 1.5 months, and my desktop has around 40 folders on it, all full of photos from various days I've gone out - I'm also pretty bad at responding to people, so if you send me a pm and it takes me 3 weeks to reply (thinking of two pm's I sent out just today) sorry, it's not intentional =).

Aside from the disorganisation I enjoy helping people, so whilst I'm still very new to photography and it seems learning something new almost every time I go out shooting, if I can help you in any way, please just let me know.

Hmm... also I hated art at school, I'd get frustrated having an idea and then not having instant results so I guess this is one of the first artistic outlets I've had (willingly), so it's good to have that too...

...and erm, I can already see this starting to turn in to a confusing ramble, so for now I'll just say again; Hi! =)

Wotcha, Toby. Sounds (and looks) like a good bit of therapy you indulged in there.

marbo's from your neck of the woods

Here's what I do with my pictures when I transfer them from camera to computer:

*Use a card reader

*Highlight all the files on the card to copy

*Create new folder (somewhere - er - smart)

*Name the folder with the day's date backwards (2011-08-14) this means that the computer now displays the files in chronological order

Then of course I forget them and don't do what Bear tells you to do, but I have a way to find pictures that I would almost certainly have lost in the rubble...

Welcome

They enter a room where the other people Neo has met are all standing, or sitting at computer terminals.

Morpheus : Most of my crew, you already know.

Trinity nods and smiles

Morpheus : This is Apoc, Switch, and Cypher.

Cypher smiles

Cypher : Hi.

Morpheus : The ones you don't know, Tank, and his big brother,

Dozer...The little one behind you is Mouse.

Mouse smiles at Neo and waves slightly shyly

FAIL. I'm offended by the deletion of offending comments.

First, Hi Toby from the Lone Star State of Texas. My husband, Yo Spiff, has been taking pictures and on this site for about 4 years. I started taking pictures with him about a year ago. He is my best asset and teacher. It isn't that he's been taking pictures longer than me but is because I now have a photog partner in crime. I have someone to bounce ideas off of, a shooting buddy most or all of the time and someone to help with post processing. It has been an awesome help.

We are also part of a flickr meet up group along with the shoots we do for here. See if you can find a buddy to shoot with or perhaps make a friend to help mentor you. Steve has joined up in some of the threads and participates in some feedback groups. Me, not so much but he gives me lots of feedback.

The best t hing about DPC besides all the wonderful people is that it always has a project to shoot. The challenges always give you a place to start and then off you go.....

Have fun, shoot often and I'm looking forward to making a new friend,

All good advice, I have the last step down already... now to start on the others =).

Thanks a lot. Luckily a friend of mine who lives locally is quite in to photography (and has been for a couple of years), so we go out shooting together fairly often (whenever one of us finds an interesting location and we both have a free day). I was reading an article in a magazine this week actually about flickr meetup groups, something I hadn't thought of before but did seem quite good fun - perhaps I'll look in to this in the future too.

The challenges I'm finding interesting as (for me) it's a lot harder to think of a [good] idea for a specific challenge than just go out and take nice pictures... so far I seem to be getting the perfect shot about 8 days after a challenge is announced, so I just need to work on kicking my creativity in sooner now =).
