Through Sunday, 8/14/2011, you can buy your child a copy of Lightroom 3 for $69!
or for anyone else in your home that meets their amazingly simple proof of eligibility requirements.
You can also get PS CS5 for $279.
These are full versions, via download; boxed-and-shipped versions are slightly higher.
Just scan your child's last report card (you can cover up the actual grades if you want), place your order, and follow the instructions. You won't be able to download until the eligibility is confirmed, but at these prices, what's the rush? Also, your credit card or PayPal account will not be charged until your eligibility is confirmed.
(I think this also includes Canadians, and I believe they have similar offers for the EU and Australia, but you'll have to do your own hunting around.) |

I might be tempted to get it at that price. I tried to upload the trial version awhile back and I couldn't get it to work on my computer now I am afraid to order it. Maybe I need to try again. |

Hmmm ... interesting timing ... most kids around here are on Summer vacation and not "currently enrolled" anywhere. Do they want a photo ID/report card from the school just graduated-from? The new school doesn't have ID cards or hold the registration process until after this deadline. |

Buy it then delay sending proof until after school starts. Even without proof you can download and use the 30 day trial.
I would jump on this offer but I have a feeling a report card from my three-year-old's preschool may not qualify. She does like to follow me around with her Fisher-Price digital camera, but I think post processing is a little beyond her attention span :) |

when i was checking out and going through the validation process, it stated that 'current' meant within the past 6 months. |

Is there a difference in functionality and features between CS5 and CS5 Student and Teacher Edition?
edit to add: Nevermind, the answer is in the details. It does include all the features of CS5 Extended.

Are the Student and Teacher Editions upgradeable later, say a couple of years later and you are no longer eligible for the student discount? |

I just finished reading some of the very informative "reviews" on the Amazon page. I put "reviews" in quotes because they are more than just reviews...they are experiences that will give you a great idea of what to expect after purchasing from Amazon versus Adobe.
Key points:
1) To first answer your question, upgrades are available but not student priced upgrades. There are no academic priced upgrades so you have to pay the full upgrade price.
2) If you buy from Amazon, your card is charged immediately. If you buy from Adobe, your are not charged until your academic status has been verified. One person stated that he wasn't aware of the process and found that his private college wasn't on Adobe's list, so he had to go through the trouble of returning the product to Amazon and waiting on a refund.
One of the reviewers gives a ton of information and tips on how to make the process go smoothly. Currently, his review is the first one on the list. |

From the Adobe North American Education FAQ: "Upgrades don't have special education pricing. However, you can purchase upgrades for educational products at the regular upgrade prices from any Authorized Education Reseller." |

I currently use Photoshop Elements 6. If I were going to buy just one of these products, which would be recommended, Lightroom 3 or PS CS5? |

I would think that would depend on what you want to do that you can't with PSE ... in what way(s) do you now find your editing limited? |

In general, I have found work arounds for most shortfalls, such as using blank levels adjustment layers for masking, etc. But Elements 6 has less control for a lot of functions (such as the shadows/highlights command), a very rudimentary curves function, limited control over black and white conversions, etc.
On the other hand, what can be done with Lightroom that cannot be done with PSE or PS?
In addition, I have a very old computer (P4, 1.90 GHz, 1.5 Gb RAM) that I don't intend on upgrading soon. RAM upgrades are also a pain (RAMBUS memory). |

personally I would do both (at those prices)...I love how LR3 works...for me the RAW conversion flow is sooooo much better than my PSE8 and I really like the presets alot (all of mine are FREE)...once I have that part done I move over to PSE8 but I'd give my eye teeth to have a CS/5 version...there are things that you can do in CS/5 that you just can't do in PSE8/6...I'm almost ready for the "grown-up version"...lol |

Masking/Layers are very different...like Daniel said there are work arounds
Selective Colors - LR3 really helps me with this
Shadows/Highlights - LR3 again is much easier
History - for re-edits in PSE8 is a pain in the butt
my biggest complaint about PSE8 is that when I save a picture for the WEB and let's say I need to go back a re-edit it. I have to start all over again because I can't "step" backwards and go to the layer I want...(full-size) Therefore I will sometimes keep my picture "open" and unsaved for days doing more editing steps/corrections (not a good thing in the Lightning Capital of the World)
Maybe I'm missing something (this is VERY probable) |

With the prices of LR3 and CS5 dropping over the last year and all these deals I would say we are in for a new version of both soon. |

I thought that too and did some research before I bought. Sounds like Lightroom 4 is still a ways off. |
