I don't think early low votes have any indication of how a image will do overall. In the last week of challenges I've seen just about every voting pattern under the sun in my own entries. 1 started high with a 7.3 after 10 votes when I woke up the next morning it was down to a 6 now after 100 votes it evened out to a 6.4. Another started low my first few votes were 4's I went to bed with around a 6 and woke up to a 7.00 now after 100 votes its also evening out with around a 6.5. Another started in the mid 6's and is most likely going to stay in the mid 6's. So no matter which way it starts it's going to end up how it's going to end up.
You either get the low votes in the beginning or you get them in the middle or you get them in the end. One way or another every photo is going to get a few low votes. It's just the way it goes. Although I think I would rather get them in the beginning and get them over with than in the end and have my hopes dashed.
The only reason I like to watch my scores when the voting begins is on that very rare occasion your votes start very high and stay very high and it's kind of a thrill even though by morning they usually drop to the normal range it's fun while it lasts. |

I ran the expirement again with the premise that you received 25 votes in the last day. On run 1503 of the simulation the random order showed a drop from 6.1150 to 5.8832. The image below shows the histogram of the last 25 votes in this random ordering and the overall moving average of the 137 votes. Interestingly, not all of the last 25 votes were low
So maybe the vote scrubber and changed votes were not factors depending how many votes you had on the last day.

That's really interesting. I'm pretty sure though that the last day was only a matter of maybe 10 or so votes, considering that I only received a total of 137 for the whole challenge. I was at a flat 6.1000 when it starting diving. And it did take a temporary upswing (I'd have to check the scores thread to find it, but around 5.95) before falling again. I really think it was people changing their votes combined with some low votes. |

As I said already, the last day was a total of "4" votes. I know this for a fact.

I'm going to throw out a different idea on voting.
Does showing your average vote cast in a challenge effect people's voting throughout a challenge? I think many people may look at it and think wow, for the first 50% I have been giving an average of 3, perhaps I'm being too harsh and I need to give more higher votes. Just a thought.

Brian puts emotional value on the scoring numbers. A low vote is a personal insult.
Paul sees the numbers more mathematically, and so do I. For "T"s, the actual numbers don't matter, as long as we vote consistently.
Because of this fundamental difference in how the numbers are perceived, this argument can go back and forth endlessly, as so many DPC arguments do.
This kind of stuff fascinates me. :) |
Thank you Don I believe you have come the closest to the Feeling/thinking patterns of the voter:):):)
I appear to be a true feeler regarding the photos I have entered, After all I took time to take the photo, process to the best of my ability on the subject, and entered it into a challenge with personal feeling, and when I vote I carry that onto photos in the challenges,There finished results in my eyes of their personal input of meeting the challenge, a 4 would ever be my lowest vote and they are rare, because to me all photos are submitted with the feeling of that photographer. Same as an Artist paints with feeling, otherwise he would not finish his canvas.
With no personal direction to any photographer,I Apologize.
