It maybe an old topics on the forum, but the question is does an interpolation program is worth the money?
I myself find that for somebody who sell a lot of print (big ones... obviously) or just somebody who like want is work to be the most perfect it can be, I think it's worth it.
This is a test I made from one of my photography. It's a prtial crop dowsized 4 times and then upsampled 4 times using differnet interpolation techniques. What do you guys think of this?
P.S. none of them have been sharpened. upsized and shown as is.

Which bicubic did you use? Photoshop offers three: Bicubic, Bicubic Smoother, and Bicubic Sharper.

Also, did you do the bicubic resampling 10% at a time or all at once?

The bicubic si would be the one in increments.

Don't bicubic sharper and bicubic smoother do that in Photoshop CS? Every reference I've read suggests using the step method regardless of interpolation algorithm, even the new ones in PS CS.

For what it's worth, I spoke with Thomas Knoll (the guy who originally wrote Photoshop, and is still actively involved with its development) about this a few weeks ago, and he pretty much said that in his opinion, it would be hard to beat Photoshop CS's Bicubic Sharper and Bicubic Smoother. He said that there may be some images that could look better if they were interpolated using a third-party algorithm, but was pretty adamant that for the general case, the new algorithms in CS were just as good as anything else he had seen. |
