Just curious as to what size the Sony 717 takes for polarizing filters.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx.

What other filters are available for the F717?

I also have one question since I never used filters before, and I whant to get one, 58mm cokin circular polarizer, do I also need those holder and ring, or it goes directly on the camera lens? I'm not sure about this and I'd like to know as soon as possible (before I order). That holder is cheap, but if it's not necesary I wouldn't get it.
If you are not sure what do I mean by the holder click here to see what I mean.
Thanks, and I hope for a fast reply because in a few hours I'm going to place the order.

I used to have a sony f717 (zoomdak's in fact)and I had that polarizer. I never used that holder. I can't imagine why you would need it.

So the filter fits on the camera? You dont need anything special to mount it onto the lens?

The cokin circular polarizer I have needs a holder. Usually in the description of the product it will tell you whether the holder is required or not.
Most Cokin filters do need the holder. There are two types, A and P. The A series is for lenses with filter threads no greater than 62mm. The P series is for lenses with larger filter threads.

There is not much description on the site where I'm purchasing them, just pictures and what they are supose to do, how they working and stuff like that. Fact is I whant to by a circular polarizer and an ND. The polariser might have a thread to screw because atleast in the picture it has a round shape but the ND is square shaped. I doubt that can be screwed, might require the holder I'm thinking. Oh well I'm going to get the holder too it's price is only 11 euro... not that expensive

Make sure the holder comes with the adapter with the proper thread size. The adapter screws into the lens and the holder slides on to the adapter.

Yes its actualy a holder + ring package. I think the "ring" is the adapter you mean, and I can order those in many sizes ofcourse I got the 58mm one that fits on f717. I think everything should be ok.

If you have extra money get an infrared filter is great for use with the F717. Check out willems'infrared shots with his F707.

I bought a 3 piece 58mm filter kit on Ebay for 18.00. It comes with a Polarizer, Neutral Desity and Flourecent Light Filter.
I looked at the Sony Filters and they where a lot more expensive.
I heard from other users the difference is not noticeable.
I will probably be selling my Sony F717 and Sony F828 when my D70 arrives. I have a lot of accessories and lenses that are 58mm.
Wide Angle - For Sony 828 and F717
2X Telephoto
3X Telephoto
and more...
If you are interested or looking for a particular item email me and I can see if I have it and can give you a good price. Most of the lenses are like new, I really don't use them that much. I use mostly closeup diopters. |

Went out and bought the Polarizer today, I like it a lot.
I think it has improved my photos by a little bit. Especially in mid day.

Damian,
The polarizer is definitely useful when shooting shiny objects and in the sun.
The Sony Cameras have s serious purple fringing problem, I found the Polarizer helps in a lot of cases. But it still occurs. |
