Interestingly, many of these films were made in the days of studio censorship, so happy endings were tacked onto some of them. Adds another layer of futility somehow: a cheap happy ending. Actually, you don't have to go back to the 50s for that. You'll find it in Blade Runner.

So be sure to slap a cheap, happy end onto your photo. Leroy may be able to offer advice on that.

Only when there wasn't a happy ending.

I haven't a clue what to do (I'm a newbie on here) but the challenge sounds great!

A good place to start would be to research what some popular films of the genre were and watch them, pay attention to lighting, theses, and subject matter.

ETA:

The Maltese Falcon (1941) is a good start. It's probably one of the most well known of the genre.

I haven't been around DPC lately, certainly not entering challenges and infrequently voting... but this makes me want to get my camera out! I'm pleased this challenge idea finally got selected, and I hope I can pull it together to submit an entry this weekend.

If you're looking for a good dose of film noir, TCM is showing The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) in about 45 minutes. John Garfield and Lana Turner star.

Other favorites of mine:
Third Man (1949, Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten)
D.O.A. (1950, Edmund O'Brien. Public domain, watch it on YouTube)
Criss-Cross (1949, Burt Lancaster, Yvonne DeCarlo)

I could go on. Maybe I will. Later...

Not to hijack the thread, but one of my sons Brad told me one time that until he was about 6 or so, he thought that the world didn't have color back in the "old days" because all the movies from that era were black & white.

Not really a subject for a last minute entry. Should have made a photo of that dead mole lying under my bed for a night (present from our cats).

No Film Noir for me...

I had planned to get out and about and shoot some candids by streetlight by the canals but the City Centre is closed due to civil unrest. :-(
