Hey y'all. Needing some help. <3
Some acquaintances of mine have shown interest in paying me to do their family portraits and senior pictures. However, I am completely lost as to how much I should charge, how to handle the rights to the photos and so on. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about making the partial transition into the business world? Perhaps some contract examples and such?
I am hopelessly clueless.

first, there are no quick and dirty answers. anyone can 'start' a business; the trick to making it successful is research and planning. one thing you need to decide is whether you are just a gal-with-a-camera who wants to pick up some extra cash, or are you really wanting to head down the road towards working professionally?
there are a TON of forum threads on this site dedicated to this topic, and there are a TON of books at your library or local big-box bookseller. i've got a lot of resources for photogs going pro on my website, as well, including an article about pricing ;-)
good luck, and happy reading!

First of all, if you are only doing a couple side jobs, don't get all stressed out about starting a business.
Second, don't worry too much about the rights to the pictures. This isn't advertising or magazine work, the pictures are not worth anything to anyone but the people who are in them, and you for your portfolio (this is not an indication of the quality, but of the commercial value of the pictures).
Third, call a local studio and ask how much a session similar to what you would be offering would cost. You'll need to make a decision if you think that your work is worth a similar price, or if you want to charge less since you have less (or no) overhead.

Real rule, the more it costs them, the less they question what you give them.

Thank you all very much. I am still on the fence about whether I want to just be that girl with a camera (I definitely have other creative endeavers I actually do consider my business, so keeping photography as a hobby is fine), or if I eventually want to go full out and do professional work. I think if it evolved into a way to make money, I would go with the flow, but it's definitely not some dream I am pursuing or anything. I just really enjoy taking photographs and sharing my perspective with the world. But if I can make a couple extra bucks while doing it, there'll definitely be no complaining from me.
=)
