intent?

I really like my Slik 700DX.
Pros- Sturdy, quick disconnect, pan head that holds up to 8lbs (video work). able to change heads (if you prefer ball heads) - legs can expand to near a horizontal level- center post that you can hang a sandbag from for extra stability. price.
cons- heavy - not a walk-around tripod. lowest minimum height. not good for shooting work straight below it (short head means that the tripod legs can be seen-- ((found out while shooting magazines + books for my porftolio))).

Intent...Indoor/outdoor portrait. Outdoor macro...flowers, insects...etc. Some school functions...dances etc...

I've seen that Slik all over the place.

The Mafrottos seem to be popular.

I was fooling around with a Vanguard Pistol grip head at a local camera store. It was very smooth and when you released that grip....it stuck.
How are Vanguards rated?

Thanks all.

Kristin, I have the same Manfrotto tripod legs, and I love them.

I use the Manfrotto 808RC4 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head though. It supports a lot and I'm used to that style. VERY secure. I also like the fact that it has tension springs so when you loosen it the camera and lens weight doesn't slam over if you're not careful. It's another great safety feature along with the solid release plate with safety lock. I'm never nervous with my gear on this head. The built in levels are also very useful. Coupled with my Manfrotto 055XPROB legs I'm extremely happy with what I use. One really important reason I went with these legs other than the whole system just rocks..is because I'm 6 foot 4 and these legs go crazy high on their own, and then you have the solid center column in addition to that. Just a fantastic buy.
