expert editing - source material must only be the same capture of the same image at different times.

make use of multiple captures or some other technique to make a normally busy, populated place look deserted or abandoned.

one long exposure can sometimes do this.

Love the idea, but I'm not sure how big the participant pool would be, owing to the need for specialized equipment / techniques.

Great idea which doesn't take exotic equipment or software. The fun would be to make a normally crowded place as "quiet as grant's tomb."

Photoshop has some tools that would do the heavy lifting.

I used them to remove the people from this Vegas scene crowded with people.
