My canon 870IS loses its charge overnight.
I have bought new battery and new charger - problem persists.
Any solutions out there?

Does it happen if you take out the battery?
Sounds like a problem with your camera.

If battery not in camera it doesn't discharge.

So take it out when you're not using it I guess.

It does sound like a problem with the camera. Something is remaining activated and drawing power. Perhaps Canon offers something in your area (Not sure if you are in the US or not) like the Loyalty program they offer here in the US, where instead of repairing an older camera, they offer you a refurbished recent model at a huge discount. I got my 50D from them for about 1/2 the street price when I sent them a 20D for repair.

My wife had a car that behaved similarly. There was a circuit remaining activated and it was draining a fully charged battery in 2 days. After throwing hundreds of $$ at the problem, I was able to determine what circuit it was on (though not the actual component) and simply pulled the fuse. All I could tell that I lost was the dome lights and radio. If she wanted tunes, she just had to stick the fuse back in while driving. Not that you can do that with a camera, though.

Thanks Yo. I believe you are on the right track.
I have noted that the shutter on the lens sounds 'sticky' on powering up compared with my daughters Canon 870IS.
In any case I have sent the camera to a Canon agent in Scotland (nearest Canon dealer to Ireland) and I will post outcome (if I can afford the repair).
