I have an opportunity to go to a couple abandoned yards with some photographers from an urban exploration group in late August. We're planning an all day event, shooting a place called "Fort Ord", and another place named "Impossible City."
I've never done this sort of stuff. My only wide lens is also quite slow, and along with the light conditions being spotty indoors, I'm expecting to be fully tripoded the whole trip.
Here's what gear I'm planning on bringing:
Camera,
Tamron 18-200 f3.5-5.5
Canon 50 f1.4
Slik 700DX Tripod (heavy, but sturdy)
2 Batteries + car charger accessory
Cabled shutter release,
Polarizing filter.
Extension tubes (not planning on using, but I know I'll see something if I leave them)
Lens Pens + dust cloth.
2x 2gb cards (~160photos each)
Am I missing anything? Anything I should rent for the day?
Can I get some advice/tips? I'm not very good at landscape photography, and I can imagine this being similar in terms of framing. |

Possibly rent a 10-20mm lens for the day - it will help a lot on your crop sensor.
Also shoot in RAW if you can and bracket - there is likely to be about 10 stops or more difference between lights and darks in each scene. You can at least do HDR or blend shots together to try and correctly expose all areas in the shot.
Good luck and enjoy. |

Leave the car charger in the car, forget about the polarizer and the extension tubes - the lens pens and dust cloths are probably a bad idea, and you can clean the lens later on at home if needed. Bring a hell of a lot more card, + all of Silent-Shooters advice.
In addition, bring a flashlight (a good one!), a set of sturdy shoes, possibly knee pads if you have them, and don't forget to bring plenty of water. |
