Hi there... I took some practice shots yesterday of some kids at work. I am going to do sports photos this coming school year and I would like to do more than the traditional run of the mill thing... So here is what I worked on yesterday.

Used an einstein with plm silver umbrella and front diffuser. One flash bounced off a reflector on the floor in front of the kids and one speedlite behind them.

I like the dark and moody, tough athlete shots but I do need to come up with some happy, sparkle shots for the grandmas :-)

I have the einstein light from paul buff, a sigma dg 500 and a canon 580ex ii. I think I need another light on the kid to lighten the mood... What are your thoughts and should I invest in another einstein unit or 2 430ex's?

Also, I was thinking about getting a couple rolls of paper to use as a background. One white, one black and then perhaps using gels on a speedlite to change the color of the background if necessary...

Please help :-)

I'm not an expert but it seems to me that you could use a little light on the left side of your models. I find a reflector, or even a white sheet helps fill in the dark areas. The main light looks a little harsh. If you move the umbrella closer to the model, it will soften it. Hope that helps.

A reflector on the left would of helped, you can get full body ones. On black, backlighting also helps, unless you want them to be coming out of the dark.

How would moving the umbrella closer make the light softer? They were fairly close anyway... It would seem that moving the light further away would make it softer... It is a counter-intuitive kinda thing?

I did want the light to be dramatic though... intimidating athlete kinda thing...

But I do need some help with less drama :-)

I do have a full-body reflector... will try that next time

The bigger the light source relative to the size of the subject, the softer the light will be. Moving the umbrella closer would make it larger relative to the subject.

Would I be better off investing in 2-430ex speedlights, one 580ex or one einstein...

I am leaning towards the 2-430ex's

It would depend what sort of light you're really looking to add. Getting an einstein would give you more flexibility with mods, as you can use bigger ones like an octa, if you so desire. But, with two smaller sources, you can use them much differently, more variety. In any case, I would go for either two 430's or one einstein. The reason being, two 430's will put out more light than one 580 if you group them together, while still being able to be separated, and the Einstein, obviously, has way more power as a single unit.
