I posted the same question a couple of months ago, and got some really helpful replies. In the end, I opted for the 1.4 and have never looked back. It really is much better than the 1.8 and isn't (relatively speaking) much more expensive. I definately wouldn't have spent the extra money on the 1.2 (unless I had bags of money), but it was well worth saving that bit extra for the 1.4.

P-A-U-L - I have a bunch of pictures taken with the 1.4, however, I had only bought it the night before a wedding I took it to... and in my excitement maxed out the f/stop on most photos. Whilst they looked great on the LCD... when viewed on a computer screen it was very apparent that the DoF was just ridiculously small for the subject (at least I hope it was that and not rubbish technical ability (which it could very well be HA)). I was a bit miffed to say the least (cue anouther bout of self-loathing)

Anyway - below are two images taken with either lens.

1.8

1.4

(You'll see what I mean about the majority of blurred images)

Whilst I may not be the best advert for the 1.4... just trust me that it was me being a teat as oposed to poor quality lens.

I used to have the f1.8, it is sharp as can be, but it's built like a cheap toy, focuses loud and slow, and the 5-bladed aperture makes the bokeh look like poop.

I sold it and got the f1.4 which has solid build, fast focus and an 8 bladed aperture that gives much better bokeh.

The f1.2 has even better build quality and bokeh, but is way out of my price range.

I'd take the f1.4 anytime over the f1.8

Thanks Spork99 - that is most helpful.

It sounds like there really is quite a difference ignoring the build quality. I had never considered the bokeh could be improved and until now was happy with the bokeh and even quite liked the pentagons. Out of interest, does the 1.4 always produce circles for bokeh or would I still get pentagons sometimes?

Here are some examples of my 1.8 bokeh to date

I've had all 3, I've been using the 1.2 for a year now and wouldn't trade it for any other lens. Use it 80% of the time. I would say that I shoot at 1.2 for most shots though, if I was shooting at f/2+ I think the 50mm 1.4 would be fine.
