USA missed three penalties, oh what a shame.

However, I only saw the last few minutes of the game (I slept in, for once) so I can't really comment on the match. It's going to be the big news here in Japan for the next for days, I can tell you that.

USA team simply gave Japan an encouragement gift after the earthquake. USA team played about 600 times better... I should say their (US Team) passing abilities were much better than man's team.

I say congrats to both teams, I never knew I actually would watch woman's soccer game for anything... they made me watch ;)

To counter the views expressed by Focuspoint, it would be very interesting to look at things such as the time of possession, the shots on goal, the total number of goals scored and then the results of the shootout... that would clearly demonstrate who was the better team... the rest is nothing more than personal feelings. :O)

Or, you could just say that the team that won today, was better today. Yesterday and tomorrow might be different. They don't count, because the game was played today.

Congratulations to the winners.

Thanks Pug-H, I already knew what the results were, I was merely busting Focuspoint's chops. :O)... and ambaker is perfectly right... the end results only demonstrates who was the best team today... tomorrow the results could be quite different.

Wait did Japan and the USA play some sort of sport? And they let women do it? Hmmm maybe I should check ESPN.com to see if I can figure out what you folks are talking about.

Anybody who wants to play that statistics game should go back to the USA vs. France game where the roles were reversed. USA won, but France dominated the stats. That's the nature of football and some teams are designed to strike on the counter.

All I know is that first time in my entire life I watched woman's soccer game and I enjoyed it a lot. I never knew girls can pass better than guys :-| It was an excellent game, 3 shots of US turned from the goalpost... when I watched it, I didn't care who would win, because both teams deserved to win, Japan for the pain they had from the earthquake and US for the first time going this far.

It was an excellent game, ladies football has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years and this game proved it. Shame they don't embrace what the guys do when they score and take off their shirts.... ;-D

Aha... you must be new at watching the game. I vividly recall Brandi Chastain doing justthat after she scored a goal, in the 1999 FIFA World Cup.

Didn't miss much; she was wearing a spandex sports bra or something, a whole lot less revealing than a bikini top would have been.

Congrats to Japan. It was a great game and I watched the whole thing. Despite any stats the US was amazing at ball control, but Japan was patient and didn't panic scoring come back goals when they needed them most. They weren't the prettiest of goals, but they still count. Unfortunately as strong a defensive game as the US women played it only takes a moment of letting down one's guard to sneak a goal through.

As amazing as the ball control and passing was they had to many close but no cigar moments in the first half. It had the potential of being a blow out, but they just couldn't find their mark early on.

What was shocking to me was the shoot out at the end. With the length of the match and substitutions the US didn't have their best strikers or penalty kickers in at the end. Pulling Megan Rapinoe out with so little time left wasn't a wise choice in my opinion. She played a great defensive game, and I'm sure she was tired, but with the World Cup on the line and the adrenaline flowing I'm sure she could have pushed on. In the end I think Hope Solo wasn't her normal self during the shootout which is unfortunate.

That said one surely can't take anything away from the perseverance of Japan. They played a smart game when they needed to and in the end they hit their mark. Disappointed, but the US Women had a great run and gave it their all.

Congrats once again to Japan.

So very true, but it was still fun to watch when it happened. She was so excited. THAT was a great match as well. Seems like I watched it only a couple of years ago. Where does the time go!
