Speaking of PhotoShop and DuoTone pictures....
For those of you who have created compelling images using DuotTone, how do you decide which colors (and how many) to use? Is this pure "art" or is there some method to your madness?

It is completely dependent on the image and my particular mood. As with everything, it's a matter of practice, trial and error, and personal preference.

I look at images I like and compare the content and color to what my photographs contain. I can then work toward acheiving an effect that I associate already with a certain type of image.
The "sunset" duotone psoted on a recent thread is a good example of working toward a specific effect. Do you want your image to look stark or soft? Pleasant or disturbing? Or both?
Think about what colors and styles represent the right "feeling" for you, and it will lead you in the right direction.

I've been using a particular duotone set for a number of photos I made of some local grain elevators. With the exception of the one with the filename 'LittleRock', these are all produced with the first color black and the second either Pantone 157 or 158: Buffalo Grain Elevators.
I just liked the result. I'm sure there are better colors (of the millions available!)...:-)

I have done a few and tend to agree with Moodville, depends totally on your own mood and preference at the time, I usually combine black with another colour, very rarely the same combination.

It depends from one shot to another, and what I whant to achieve.
In this one, I felt these tones go very well with the subject.
This is one I took today, the background whas too busy and I almost trashed it, until I discovered that this quadtone reduced the busy background and brought more attention to the subject.
By the way I just took the last one today so anyone is welcome to comment. I wish I took it within the advertisment challenge dates :))

When I look at duotone images, or images with a duotone layer added to them, what i notice is the feeling... That's what makes a good duotone to me: the mood it puts you in when you look at it. It doesn't just capture a moment in time (like many photographs) it pulls you in a direction the photographer wants you to go in.

I have a really low quality pic that I was playing with but I didn't save any changes, I can get a better copy tomorrow.
But any way here it is.

Well, I guess there are no easy answers to this one. I've played a bit, so I'll play some more and see if I can't come up with a combination that works.
Thanks for the replies!

for those that use GIMP and those that don't
this is a great tutorial
with a photo (about half way down the page) that has been adjusted with a various range of tones so you can see the differance it makes to a photo
