I haven't been this excited about a challenge since the "Fine arts" one. I can't wait to see e.ones photos, and to see if Ben can win in his own challenge ! No pressure Ben !

I'm not sure that a beach shot is the only style of bspurgeon At least I hope we don't see a challenge full of beach shots. He has so much more to offer!! We shouldn't pigeonhole him. Then again he has been known to shoot a few pigeons.

I want to put in my official disclaimer now...;-)

My sentiments exactly! :P I have only had time to think about what I might shoot and whether I can pull all the right elements together so far. If I do manage to shoot for this one I hope I at least come close to Ben's fine style. But I expect it will be a fun shoot :)

I saw other than only beach photos in his style. I characterize his photos with three attributes:

1- Black and white
2- Slow Shutter speed
3- Mostly missing showing faces

Anyone agrees?

Nah, plenty of faces show up in his portfolio. And while B&W is predominant, there is color, and not everything is slow shutter speed. I think overall you want to see if you can capture something that speaks to you in some way, and see if maybe you can get it to speak to someone else, too. Doesn't even have to say the same thing; but catch their eye, hold their attention. Enjoy the moment!

I checked the profile once more and did some statistics and it seems that in his last 125 entries 25 only have a clear face photo or even a face, 93% or about are black and white and well over 65% are with a slow shutter, but as you mentioned melethia they do speak to you somehow.
Most of the work is or somewhat underexposed and most all have a very distinct crop.

I think we should be looking at the whole of Ben's portfolio, not only challenge entries.

The voters here love for shots to fit inside a nice tight box, and since Ben's portfolio sits very far outside of said box,
I worry this will be another DNMC feeding frenzy... Do not see the connection? DNMC!!! Feels so good to type that I guess?

I look forward to submitting a 93% black and white photo of 20% of a clear face at 65% slowness.

This would be the ideal challenge for Ben to enter something like a bright, colorful, overcooked HDR, and then enjoy all the incoming critiques saying it is not something Ben would do.

If you work on this a little bit it may fall within the statistics limits

Nevermind.

I think we should attempt to somehow see the world through Ben's eyes instead of just doing a Hannibal Lecter on his face.

Saying that though i find Ben's worldview to be hopelessly serene, optimistic and beautiful so for my entry i'll attempt to ugly it up a bit. I'm sure he won't mind.

I am in, though I am gonna guess I will have a pretty low score.

I once went to a cooking school where we were doing a foreign exchange kind of deal. A bunch of French culinary students came over here for a visit and some demos and then later on in the year our students went over to France to visit and see some demos. One of the American instructors put on a demo for the French students of Americanized French desserts. It was rather embarrassing. It was like the American instructor pretty much saying "Look at how we bastardize your food!".

Ben - Look at how we bastardize your style. ;)

LOL, love it.

I'm in, not expecting to do well either, Le Maître makes it look so simple.

I own an 4-stop ND filter now. Wouldn't mind a 9 or 10 stop one day, but for now this is fine. :)

If I were limited to one word to describe Ben's style it would be "thoughtful", both in his approach to the taking and presentation, as well as how I find my response to much of his work. Even the ones that make me say "huh??"

Not much time at the moment, but I'll try to enter one here. I love Ben's photos. Not typical DPC, but great!

Funny, I thought you'd be in it out of sheer compulsion! :)

I went out and shot this weekend, and failed miserably at this. Ben, you make it look so easy.

I'm not in it for either. I really like my pic. Certainly something a bit different for me. Though more of my images lately have been like that.
