Speaking of MC - or DNMC - the American motorcycle association once issued a statement that 99% of American motorcyclists weredecent, law-abiding citizens.
This is why some people proudly wear the 1% badge.
Think of DNMC as a trophy. |

And then people will DNMC you for the foreground object being the subject and not far away.

'Distance' and 'far away' are relative terms, to someone in the US or Aus the next town can be 40-50 miles away, in the UK it's generally single figures, either can be considered far away though depending on what a person is familiar with. A long lens can make something 'distant' seem much closer while a wide lens could cause confusion about what the subject is, in both cases though the subject could be 'far away'. In addition to this, there are as many interpretations of a challenge as there are people who read the title and description, enter something that you like and think fits, if someone thinks it DNMC then that is their opinion and right or wrong (eg, whether you agree or not) they are entitled to have that opinion. |

I think everyone is struggling with the same thoughts. I normally don't have any problems with challenge descriptors, but this leaves a lot open.
For instance, if the subject is distant from us, and shot with a wide angle so that the subject is barely noticeable or seen, and you switch to a telephoto to see it better at what point is the focal length bringing it to close for the voters. I mean the subject is still quite far away, but depending on how it's shot one might never know that. That's a bit vague.
Not all of us are shooting mountains where you can tell it's far away etc. I have a feeling that if I choose to submit something that most entries the subject will be closer and more defined than mine. I'll probably see things that look like they are twenty foot away, and someone will say it was shot with their 500mm lens and a multiplier. LOL.
It's just hard to know and that's why so many people are concerned about the same thing. Hmmmmm...

If everyone is struggling with the same issue on this challenge, including the voters, then there shouldn't be a problem. Shame this isn't an ideal world TBH lol ;) |

James, you've been in 50 challenges. You DO know that clarity in what their interpretation of the challenge is suddenly presents itself to them once the challenge starts right? LOL. All of a sudden everyone knows what constitutes a DNMC, but before the challenge we were all scratching our heads. LOL. That's the way the ball rolls. :)
I normally don't even sweat that, but since this will be my 100th challenge I wanted to do well....as well as the voters would allow that is. LOL.

well, i'm in with "my" interpretation. it's a safe bet that some will think it's wrong and DNMC, should be an interesting week. let the complaining (aka scores) thread begin.

Some of the obvious far aways are the moon and the stars so I am expecting quite a few of those. |

I'll repeat what I always do: Having a visually strong image is more important to your average than meeting each and every voter's interpretation of the challenge. So if you have a great shot that fits the challenge kinda-sorta in a semi-shoehorny kind of way, and a so-so image that nobody can argue about, go with the stronger shot.

I lucked out with this challenge as far as MC. I literally yelled to my wife, "Oh my God there's my distance shot!" when I saw it. |

My sister-in-law is from Torquay! She, my brother, and two young kids just moved there from the US in January.
And I'm hoping to visit in November! :)

I went with this interpretation when submitting my entry. I shot the same object in several different ways and was going to enter one that clearly focused on the distant object but my wife convinced me to go with the visially stronger image.
Not to say that my shot is all that great :) It is my first challenge here so hopefully I can get above 5. |
