I currently have an old canon s100 (digital camera). I am looking to venture out into buying a nikon d70. Is this the right thing to do? I'm thinking this camera would last a long time as a get better in taking photos. I would like to know if I should buy this camera or just buy another point and shoot camera. Also if I do buy the nikon d70 what otheraccesory is a must have. Like different lenses, memory, sofware, etc....

thankx

I've had the D70 for several months now and I must say that I'm very happy with it. I would also take a look at the Canon Rebel as well. I have the "Kit" lens and a Sigma 105mm macro lens. As far as memory goes get a couple 512 meg cards and also opt for the Nikon software. Be aware though that there is a slight learning curve with the D70. Lots of setting and options to use.

Have you checked out DPReview to get some notions about how peole like their choices after making them and such stuff. Drop in on various fora and let them try to convert you. And while you are looking at the Nikon and Canon lines be sure to incluse the Olympus line in there as well.

From your present camera to a D70 is a giant step. You may find your needs, at least in the short run, can be satisfied with something less than a DSLR. What kind of photography do you do most often? Do you have a background of using a film SLR? You can still make a big upgrade in camera, and save a lot of money, if you consider something like an Olympus C-8080 if you want to make large prints; or a Panasonic DMC-FZ10 if a long zoom tickles your fancy.

P.S. this is a pretty good community here, most people are quite helpfull and I for one would like to welcome you, HOWEVER starting two seperate threads to ask the same question is concidered rude. I am assuming that this was a newbie error. so I read in my netiquite manual.

Don't forget that a significant camera upgrade may also require large increases in processing speed and storage/backup capacity.

Wow - you're not kidding! When I went from a 3 to 6mp camera my storage requirements went up quickly. I outgrew my CD burner almost immediately and had to go to a DVD burner. The memory cards also had to grow up from 128mb to 512.

All that being said, the investment was one I'm still very pleased with. I absolutely love the control my D70 gives me over image composition. Freedom to create excellent images, and freedom to screw them up in more ways than I'd imagined! The biggest thing is to think about the form factor. A dSLR and lenses are MUCH bigger and heavier than a digicam. If this fits your expectations, and you don't mind the bulkiness then go for it. I absolutely love everything about my D70 - not a single regret.
