When I use a Photo Inkjet printer to print a BW photo, what ink cartridge am I using? WOuld it use a blend of all the colors or just the black ink?

most likely a blend of the colors unless you tell it to print in black and white in the print options. I think the only time it actually prints with just the black cartridge is when you are printing documents and even then you still might have to tell it to print in black and white.

Try taking out of the cartridges and printing the picture. If it works, switch to the other one and see which one looks better, I am betting it will be the tri-color one.

I'm pretty sure that it's a blend of colours unless you tell the printer to only use black. I've noticed colour casts on my bw prints from the Canon i950.

Different printers do this differently... In most cases it is a blend of the colors, but there are some which use the black. Some newer models even have a grey cartridge.

Every inkjet printer combines colors to produce blacks and grays. That's why you get the color cast. I don't believe that taking out any of the cartridges will produce any better results. It will worsen them if I'm not mistaken.

That being said, the only home printer (that I'm aware of) that prints black & white with no color cast is the HP. Any HP printer that supports PhotoRet Pro (PhotoSmart 7690) will use a "Gray" cartridge and delivers the best B&W of any inkjet printer out there. True black & white actually.

There are a couple of companies that make special ink cartridges to produce very high quality black and white prints. I don't know that you can switch easily, but given the price of printers it might not be out of line to have one dedicated for black and white.

Maybe somebody can post the names of some companies that produce these inks. My google search is producing way too many hits for sites trying to sell the standard inks.

Thanks everyone, I'm gonna try it. Just wondering whether I'll need to stock up on the black, guess not :)
