I'm thinking you might try to emulate these folks for a couple of weeks... With a poster size printout of the nastygram and a response from you, stating that since they clearly don't understand what would justify such a letter, you'd like to help educate them as to what bad really is... :)
ETA: I'd probably explain that this is actually not a messy yard, but an educational artistic installation which is intended to dramatically convey the concept of unkempt... And tell the inspector to not worry, it's only a temporary installation and that you won't demand any payment for your public art installation... ;)
And yes, Melethia is so smart! Pink Plastic Flamingos would really spice up this drab looking yard in a very proper and festive way... :) LOL!

Shouldn't that be "Anonymous letter from nasty neighbor"...? |

The front "lawn", only the nearmost 10 feet, the neighbors yard starts with the wood fence. This has been kept reasonably trimmed. The backyard is overgrown, but nobody can see it.

I spoke the the president of the neighborhood association a little while ago. I also had a question about something else, unrelated. She was appalled by such a nasty letter. She also felt bad because my wife hired her son to work on our yard while I was laid up. I forgot about that, but it was primarily to mow the small area of grass.

So I haven't been doing ANY yard work and it's gotten out of control. Got a nastygram from the city the other day and am starting to trim things. Today though, there was a rude and nasty letter in my mailbox signed "your neighbors" blasting me for my "disgraceful" yard. Not mature enough to talk to my face, it appears. I want to chew metal. Any suggestions? |
That's why I'm glad we live in a Home Owner's Association. They take care of all these sorts of things.
What about this. Make it really dramatic. Using a wheelchair or crutches, pathetically try to make improvements to your yard. Make it an all day thing. Make sure you're really loud with the moaning and groaning.
Maybe they'll realize the situation and at least offer to help. |

That is just incredibly stupid and childish, those neighbors must really lead sad and boring lives to get uptight about what looks to me like a perfectly clean yard, whoever instigated the letter is to be felt sorry for more than anything else. |

I was thinking that a reasonable response might be a polite and apologetic letter, mentioning the angry and harshly phrased anonymous letter I received. Say that I am now mostly recovered from the broken kneecap I suffered earlier in the year and that I can begin getting my yard tidied up but it will take some time. Thank them for their patience and understanding and ask them to please come to me if they have any issues in the future. Then mail it to all the neighbors within spitting distance, since the letter was from my "neighbors". It will certainly hit this person and everyone around him.

Well, things are a bit overgrown, and most of the other yards in this area are well manicured. I'm not a lover of yard work, but I normally keep things acceptable, though far from perfect. I do have a strong suspicion of where it came from.

What a pain. I don't seem to have any problems with my neighbors about my yard. Round up a few dozen fired rifle and shotgun shell casings and scatter them about your driveway. Even the gang thugs will leave you alone.

The grass grows up to meet the air coming down
and that's a good idea
cos if it didn't grow up the air would have to come down the extra amount
because there's got to be something there
yes there's got to be something there all the time
yes there's got to be something there.
Which is a song by Ivor Cutler, from Velvet donkey.
He likes four foot grass best:
'you can see how happy the air is, it doesn't have far to go...'
The best A tried and trusted yard clearing technique is a gallon or two of petroleum spirit and a match, but it can be so easy to accidentally splash a bit over, if you know what I mean.
Anyway, less time and energy wasted on mean spirited bastards the better... |

Wow, like everyone else, I had expected the pics to show just a little justification for the letter. I'd show pics of my yard for real horror, but Cory already posted it below.
Lots of reasonable, rational advice in the thread - now I'll offer mine. Burn down every other house in the village to send a message. ;-) |

The bush out in front of the driveway could really use some work. Maybe a bit of topiary would be nice. Some times it is worth the extra effort to let special neighbors know you really care.
I think modeling it on something like this lovely bit of venting this fellow added to his home to send a message to a special neighbor.

One of the rare times we have snow in North Texas, and it's the day you and Cory visit. The two of you are not letting me forget when we had snow. I am still blaming it on all the northerners who came for the Superbowlâ„¢ bringing their weather with them.

Just did 10 minutes worth of raking stuff I clipped yesterday. Left a huge ugly pile of leaves and twigs in the walkway till tomorrow. Now I'm going for a bike ride.

I'm back. Only 12 miles, but that's pretty good for a fat guy getting over a broken kneecap. I'm in pretty good shape, for the shape I'm in. (and round is a shape.)

12 miles is pretty damn good I think... Considering that it's 12 city miles especially! |

You left them in the walkway? Tut tut.
Meanwhile, hire a sheep.
