Hey all

Finally decided to get back to the freelance copywriting/editing thing, and yes I want to promote my photography too, so that means I need a website. I have the domain name, but absolutely no clue as to how to build a website, let alone maintain the damn thing. Don't really have the $$ to pay a professional designer, so wondering if there are any really basic site templates that come complete woth programming etc?

Helpful suggestions welcome!

Susan, there really are endless options available to you these days and many are relatively inexpensive. The ones listed below have ready made templates that you can tweak to fit your needs and all host the site on their servers. They have various levels of subscription, which limits the features you can have.

Here are some I have looked at over the last few years

www.clikpic.com
www.viewbook.com
www.foliosnap.com
www.layerspace.com
www.squarespace.com
www.creativemotiondesign.com

A quick google search will bring up many more options, but the above list is a starting point for you!

Hey Snaffles, I use a SmugMug site. After days of researching and looking into my options I concluded that SmugMug did exactly what I wanted, was very user friendly, and the DGrin forums are amazingly helpful. It did take me some time to get my site exactly as I wanted it, but you don't need to do a ton to get a basic template up.

With SmugMug you get unlimited Storage, Unlimited Bandwidth, and many other things including the ability to auto Watermark all your images, sell prints, password protect galleries etc.

My site is at: //www.TheBaumPhotos.com if you want to check it out.

There are many options there, and I didn't think it was too expensive for what you get. I have a Pro Membership, and it was about $140 a year. Although, there are many cheaper options. I initially did a basic membership until I get everything as I wanted, and then I upgraded to Pro and added a few more of the 'pro perks' to my site.

Link for my Referral for $5 (or $10, I forget) off if you purchase. You can check out all their options as well.

Some like it some don't, all up to what you want, and what you want to spend really.

I was a Smugmug user for three years or so, but switched to Zenfolio this year. I liked Smugmug's site ok, but I didn't like the way the pricing models were setup if you are selling prints online. Zenfolio lets you set price templates that you can apply to any gallery--with Smugmug, you can copy an existing galleries prices, but then you have to remember what's what. Also, Zenfolio handles pricing for aspect ratios better, and offers "no cropping" options, whereas Smugmug doesn't (customers can crop--which makes sense for some photos but not for fine art).

And as a BIG bonus, the professional level subscription 33% less--$99/year on Zenfolio, $150 on Smugmug). I also found the setup easier; and I like the tree oriented (like Explorer) view of my galleries for maintenance.

I started a Zenfolio user group (thread) here on DPC here: //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=1070735

If you join, or have questions, post there!

And of course, Zenfolio has referral discounts too...this will save you 10% off your subscription: JS5-7XQ-F3A

Thanks everyone for all your help, think I have enough info now to make an informed choice as to which way to go :-)
