If you do a Youtube/Google search on makeshift lighting you would be amazed with what you can do with say worklights or clamp lights from Home Depot that are cheap and inexpensive. Lighting too harsh, don't have a softbox or something to diffuse the light? Sheets stretched on poles or perhaps on a large empty picture frame propped up in front of the light source to diffuse it. There are many great tutorials that can be found online.

And yes, I have gone the 'Mcgyver' method to help achieve the end result

---------------> Lighting set-up and

----------> Lighting set-up

Now go out and shoot - you can do this!!!!

You have inspired me! Doing my googling as I speak! :D

Seems odd for an advertisement. The topic should "Absolut Ad Beyond Words" or some such.

Actually if you look at the Absolut ads they usually don't have text except for the "title".

Where can I get an empty absolut bottle? (Or even something that looks like one?)

I am too cheap to buy a $20 bottle of vodka I will never use, so I bought a mini bottle at the liquor store for $2.99. Then, I got lucky and found an empty in the corner of the parking lot about 50 feet from where I parked for this morning. There were a couple dozens empty booze and wine bottles -- lots of after hours drinking around here.

Sorry, Wendy. I know that does not help you.

You don't HAVE to have a bottle if you look at some of the ads that are clever use of the bottle shape Absolut Addition or Absolut Achievement

Last challenge we had these great twists

They used a tiny bottle that is sold at liquer stores for under $5

or

What other household items can be used to great effect -

or

if chili peppers can be used why not bacon, flowers (heh, just notice #34 in the last challenge), etc. etc. just let the brain take a spin (but please no squirrels:-) !!!) .

Why not? I'd love to see a squirrel drinking a mini bottle of vodka!

eta: We've got a squirrel here that I strongly suspect has a drinking problem. It's constantly falling out of the tree in my backyard. My dog has been flipping out, and I think one of these times he'll get him!

A intoxicated squirrel is a scary thing :-)....we have so many squirrels out here now that you have to be careful driving for they (I kid you not) will run right in front of or across the street just as you are approaching the road. I've heard the teens and my kids call them 'suicide squirrels'

Critters can get drunk on fermented fruit and the like, so wouldn't be surprised. Is it an apple tree or suchlike?

And fer gawd's sake wimmen....SSHHHHHHHH!!! Don't go giving vawendy any ideas!! She has enough ribbons already!! ;-)

At this end, very very VERY happy with my shoot. Getting the vodka bottle itself was a lot of fun. I don't drink vodka and don't know many martini types. A couple of bars in town had only Smirnoff, so I went to the liquor store thinking I'd have to buy a small bottle of Absolut and make do with that.

It was my lucky day; I ran into the manager himself stocking the shelves and asked him who served Absolut. And guess what, it's a fine-dining restaurant located 5 minutes' drive from home! So I pop by on the way home. And there out front watering the flowers is the owner, so I politely ask if she might have an empty Absolut bottle kicking around. She does, so I offer to water the flowers for her, and a few minutes later she returns with it.

So I returned home, did a few things to the bottle (muwahahahahaaa) and am taking a break from the shoot. But so far exceedingly overjoyed with what I'm getting.

Good luck everyone!

An overly ripe blackberry tree. I didn't think of the fermented fruit aspect. LOL! I was thinking more along the lines of my neighbor the lush with his constant overflowing recycle bin of empty beer cans.

snaffles, I was actually thinking about doing the same! I'm sure bars and/or restaurants wouldn't mind giving away and empty bottle!

Here is some poor man, picking up empties and probably selling them to have a few extra bucks to give his kids, not knowing that some think that all these empties are his... I feel for him. :O)

@ Kelli...teehee! My guess is the overly ripe berries then, otherwise your squirrel would be permanently sozzled from the neighbour's empties :-)

@ Revecca...yep, I just wasn't in the mood to blow $25-$30 on a bottle of booze that I wasn't really planning on drinking anytime soon. And the few martini types I do know live in Ottawa, some 70km away, they're more the Grey Goose type of vodka swiggers. Out here in the sticks, most are content with Smirnoff or *shudder* Prince Igor.

Anyhow the morale of this story...ask the local liquor store manager what local establishments serve the higher-end stuff. I already had my suspicions that the Brigadoon used Absolut, the liquor store manager just confirmed it :-) At most they're going to miss what, a 20 cent deposit fee? So they're hardly missing out on giving away an empty liquor bottle every so often.

Woo hoo! I'm in. I think it's a shot with some mojo. We'll see if the voters agree.

..spent 36 dollars on vodka today.. sigh..

.... I just spent 3 hours shooting, and over 5 hours editing.. only to realize that apparently, Nikon reset the date on my camera when it was sent for repair (I got it back just a few days ago). Therefore, according to the properties on my image, it was taken on January of 2009.

I am so frustrated and disappointed! It's past 5am, I work tomorrow, don't get out until late, and there's just no way I'll be able to re-shoot. :(

Ouch... I would love to see the photos though!
06/21/2011 05:23:24 AM · #43
Tell me about it! I wasn't even done editing.. but was going to finish tomorrow, and randomly decided I wanted to check the date. Who would've thought! I'll try to re-shoot.. That's actually the easy part.. I currently have my Photoshop on a slower computer so it takes me a good while to do ANYTHING to edit which is what's going to kill me.. We'll see. If anything, I'll do my "January 2009" picture and show you guys anyhow.

the only place i can think of is a bar. or maybe ask friends if they have a bottle of absolut and offer them an empty bottle for them to put the vodka in so they can give you the empty one. less than 24 hours to go though.

i've got an entry in but the more i look at it, the more i think it will bomb.

Though it would suck if you did pull your entry, it'd be better to do it now than during voting, imho....

No chance -- I've just enabled everyone to improve their finish by a couple of percentiles ... ;-)

I've decided to keep it in as I don't often get to finish in the top 50 :-) I've mucked around with the pp and I don't hate it as much as I originally did. Not matter what it score's I won't pull it during voting and just accept the punishment. Perhaps I'll be able to keep the GeneralE company.
